Ludwig Cornelius Freiherr von Heyl zu Herrnsheim (born December 11, 1886 in Worms ; † November 6, 1962 there ) was a German industrialist and politician ( DVP ).

Life and work

As one of seven children of the leather goods manufacturer Cornelius Wilhelm von Heyl zu Herrnsheim and his wife Sofie geb. Stein (1847–1915) attended von Heyl's old language grammar school in Worms . After graduating from high school, he began to study chemistry at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 1905 he became active in the Corps Saxo-Borussia Heidelberg . When he was inactive , he moved to the TH Karlsruhe . He served in the Prussian Army from 1909 to 1911 and took part in the First World War as an officer from 1914 . In 1919 he was released from the Reichswehr .

After the death of his father, his brother Cornelius (1874–1954) took over the management of the leather works. He himself was temporarily manager of the Wormser Lederwerke Heyl-Liebenau and from 1942 to 1944 he also served as chairman of the leather industry business group based in Berlin. In 1952 he was then chairman of the supervisory board of the company that was converted into a stock corporation. On January 29, 1917 he married Eva Maria nee von der Marwitz-Stein (1889-1959). There were six children from this marriage, including Marie-Elisabeth, married. Klee (1922-2018).

As an honorary member of Saxo-Borussia, he supported the sponsorship of the Heidelberger Kreis from 1948 , which also made him an honorary member. When it was dissolved after eight semesters and the corps reconstituted, von Heyl and eight other Saxon-Prussians put down the bond .

Ludwig von Heyl zu Herrnsheim was Protestant. Baron von Heyl zu Herrnsheim died on November 6, 1962 in Worms. His estate is in the Worms City Archives .

Baron von Heyl zu Herrnsheim joined the German People's Party (DVP) and was a city ​​councilor in Worms during the Weimar Republic . From 1924 to 1927 he was a member of the Landtag of the People's State of Hesse .

On March 20, 1945, about six weeks before Adolf Hitler's suicide, the invasion of US troops ended the tyranny of National Socialism in Worms. Baron von Heyl zu Herrnsheim was appointed head of the city administration by the US occupation forces on March 23, 1945 with the designation "City Elder". On May 21, 1945 he was replaced by Ernst Kilb ( SPD ), who died on January 6, 1946 after a serious illness.
