commitment
There are a number of independent airborne brigades or airborne divisions. These feature-deductible and air-transportable armored personnel carriers , mortars, artillery and air defense systems. They are large combat forces that can be deployed surprisingly in the rear of the enemy in order to tactically excavate enemy command centers and communications equipment or to destroy nuclear weapons and delivery systems, to occupy important ports or other traffic-related points in operational use or to break through their own mechanized forces in an attack support and secure this in the hostile hinterland. According to statements made by the commander in August 2010, due to the available capacities of the transport aviation forces, it is possible to simultaneously dispose of a unit of regimental strength.
In Russia there are only four airborne divisions left. There were plans as part of the military reform to reduce the force to three divisions, but these plans were abandoned after great public pressure.
There are currently in Russia:
7th Guard Air Storm Division (Mountains) in Novorossiysk
Special feature: Can be used in the mountains.
- 108th Airborne Regiment in Novorossiysk
- 247th Airborne Regiment in Stavropol
- 1141st Artillery Regiment in Anapa
+ other smaller regiments
76th Guard Air Storm Division in Pskov
- 23rd Airborne Regiment in Pskov
- 104th Airborne Regiment in Tscherech
- 234th Airborne Regiment in Pskov
- 1140th Artillery Regiment in Pskov
+ other smaller regiments
98th Airborne Guard Division in Ivanovo
- 217th Airborne Regiment in Ivanovo
- 331st Airborne Regiment in Kostroma
- 1065th Artillery Regiment in Kostroma
+ other smaller regiments
106th Airborne Guard Division (in Tula, Ryazan, Naro-Fominsk)
- 51st Airborne Regiment
- 137th Airborne Regiment
- 1182nd Artillery Regiment
+ other smaller regiments
The artillery - regiments are air transportable and in terms of combat support troops with antitank - Antiaircraft - mortars - and pioneering components divided mixed. The units are partly mechanized with BMD- 1 or BMD-2, partly with GAZ-2975 Tigr and previously UAZ wheeled vehicles (similar to the " Humvees " of the US armed forces).
Independent air storm brigades
- 11th Air Storm Brigade in Ulan-Ude
- 31st Air Storm Brigade in Ulyanovsk
- 56th Air Assault Brigade in Kamyshin, Volgograd Oblast
- 83rd Air Storm Brigade in Ussuriysk
The air storm brigades (LST) essentially consist of two LST battalions and a paratrooper battalion as well as a "heavy" combat support battalion (anti-tank, anti-aircraft, grenade launcher and engineer forces). In addition, there is a company of Spetsnaz , staff / intelligence / long-range reconnaissance / medical personnel and a platoon of pioneer and combat divers.
The LST brigades are structured in such a way that they can grow up into an airborne division in the event of a mobilization and therefore have a higher number of officers , NCOs and temporary soldiers in their battalions than comparable LL battalions of the airborne regiments.
Spetsnaz VDW
- 45th Independent Reconnaissance Guard Regiment (Speznas) in Kubinka .
- The 45th Regiment is only equipped with light vehicles and weapons and performs security tasks. It is considered a lone fighter regiment. Although it is fully skydiving, almost only helicopter missions are practiced. At the turn of the year 2014/15 the regiment became the 45th Guard Special Reconnaissance Brigade .

At the 242nd and 301st officers' school, new teaching departments were set up, each with two companies for mine and combat divers, as well as one teaching department each for military medical and psychological personnel.
In the event of mobilization, the officer schools can each grow up to become an airborne division, but without a combat support regiment, as well as a structural mobile brigade with a "heavy" battalion.
In Ulyanovsk there is the Ulyanovsk Garden Suvorov Military School, where boys from the 5th to 11th grade study. This school is the only one in Russia that is run by the airborne troops.
