Luigi Serafini (Cardinal)

Luigi Serafini (born June 6, 1808 in Magliano Sabina , † February 1, 1894 in Rome ) was an Italian Curia Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Serafini came from a noble family from Urbino and was a nephew of Giovanni Serafini , who was also created cardinal in 1843. After attending schools in his hometown, he himself studied philosophy at the Collegio Romano and then law at the University of La Sapienza , where he obtained his doctorate in private law and canon law on April 11, 1832 . After he became a lawyer for the Curia on July 4, 1836 , he was appointed representative of the Curia in the province of Rieti on January 19, 1843, and on December 18, 1843 as prelate . On January 11, 1844, he became an employee of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature , where he was first trainee lawyer and then on December 21, 1846 an auditor. After working as a judge at civil courts from September 27, 1847 to March 19, 1850, he became an auditor at the Roman Rota , the second highest court of the Roman Curia as a court of appeal after the apostolic signature.

He was ordained a priest on June 25, 1853 . After several years 1858-1870 as rain the Apostolic Penitentiary , he was appointed bishop of the June 27, 1870 Viterbo and Tuscania appointed the episcopal ordination he gave on July 17, 1870 Costantino Patrizi Naro , cardinal bishop of Porto and Santa Rufina and Subdean of the College of Cardinals ; Co-consecrators were the two Curia Archbishops Pietro de Villanova Castellacci (1815–1881) and Antonio Rossi Vaccari (1808–1874). Luigi Serafini held the office of bishop in the diocese of Viterbo until February 20, 1880.

On March 12, 1877, he was created cardinal by Pope Pius IX. and at the same time his appointment as cardinal priest with San Girolamo dei Croati as the titular church . As such he took part in the conclave of 1878 , on which Pope Leo XIII. was chosen.

After he was Prefect of the Apostolic Signature , the Supreme Court of the Curia, between May 13, 1884 and July 31, 1885 , he succeeded Lorenzo Nina as Prefect of the Council Congregation on July 31, 1885 and held this office until his replacement by Angelo Di Pietro on June 19, 1893. Cardinal Serafini was also treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals between 1887 and 1888 . After that he was appointed cardinal bishop of the diocese Sabina-Poggio Mirteto on June 1, 1888 .
