Luther is a British crime series about the detective John Luther, who shows exceptional genius in solving various criminal cases, but is notorious for his unconventional approach. Actor Idris Elba won a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of the title character .
action
The series portrays the life of the talented and astute London police detective, John Luther. By devoting himself to his work, Luther pushes his private life so far into the background that it breaks his marriage. Every single case continues to captivate him in such a way that he is ready to exceed his moral and even legal boundaries in order to solve the case.
Characters and performers
- Idris Elba as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther
Detective Chief Inspector Luther works at the London Serious Crime Unit (SCU) and has the special gift of being able to put together a lot of individual pieces of evidence to form an overall picture, even in the case of complicated crimes. But as ingenious as he is on the one hand, he is so obsessively fixated on solving his cases on the other hand that he sometimes threatens to lose sight of the line between good and bad.
- Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan
Alice attended the University of Oxford at the age of 13 and received a PhD in astrophysics at 18 . She is now working as a research fellow at the University of London. In the first episode, Alice is introduced as the murderess of her parents, whose deed was so well thought out that Luther cannot find any incriminating evidence against her. As a motive for the act, she indicated that her parents had made her a freak because of the gifted education. Alice shoots Ian Reed in episode 6 at the end of the episode - as punishment for Reed's murder of Zoe Luther. She is later admitted to a mental hospital, from which she breaks out again and fled abroad.
- Steven Mackintosh as Ian Reed's Detective Chief Inspector
Ian is John's most loyal friend. The two have a long history together. Ian always has his back to John and has helped him out of trouble countless times. Like John, work is his first priority, and that's why, after his three failed marriages, Ian can understand better than anyone what John has to go through when he separates from Zoe. In episode 5 of the 1st season he turns out to be corrupt and shoots Zoe Luther. He is also shot at the end of episode 6 - by Alice Morgan.
- Indira Varma as Zoe Luther
Zoe met John when they were both attending the same university. Their relationship seemed perfect until John's work became more and more overwhelming. She had to watch how he closed up more and more. So she fell in love with Mark North, a man who could offer her the carefree life she had missed lately. Zoe Luther is shot dead by Detective Chief Inspector Ian Reed in Season 1, Episode 5.
- Saskia Reeves as Detective Superintendent Rose Teller
Rose is a conscientious and result-oriented investigator and Luther's superior. She is the liaison between the police force and the police officers in the field. Thanks to her trust in John, he was able to return to SCU after his collapse. Rose does not appear after the dissolution and re-establishment of the SCU (between the 1st and 2nd season).
- Warren Brown as Detective Sergeant Justin Ripley
Justin is an eager and ambitious young detective. He studied forensic psychology and criminology and knows all of the textbook tricks for solving criminal cases over the past 50 years. What he lacks is experience. That is why he has continuously submitted applications to the SCU to be allowed to be Luther's new partner, as he has heard of Luther's great experience and his ability to solve even the most difficult cases. While he is very loyal, he too has his own views of what is wrong and what is right.
- Paul McGann as Mark North
Mark is a human rights attorney. He is an attractive, charming and humble man who is in love with Zoe. He rightly believes that she could live a much happier life with him than with Luther. He works for a non-governmental organization and is the total opposite of Luther because of his easy-going manner despite his dedication to the job. Mark and John become friends after Zoe's death, and Mark helps John, for example, by temporarily taking Jenny in.
- Dermot Crowley as Detective Chief Inspector Martin Schenk
Schenk works for the Commission of Inquiry into Police Misconduct. Although he appears quite humble, many fear him for his quick grasp. His astuteness and intuition make him perfect for convicting corrupt and brutal police officers. After the dissolution and re-establishment of the SCU (between 1st and 2nd season) Schenk is its boss and thus John's superior.
production
According to producer Neil Cross , the character of Luther was influenced by Sherlock Holmes and Columbo : Luther's intellect and his way of solving cases can be compared to the character of Sherlock Holmes during the construction of the series, in which the perpetrator was already at the beginning of the series Episode is presented and the viewer is excited about how this is convicted, based on Columbo (so-called inverted detective story ).
The series will be shot around London and produced by BBC Drama Productions . Neil Cross, who came up with the idea for the series, wrote all the scripts for all the episodes.
Charisma
The first episode aired on May 4, 2010 on the British broadcaster BBC One . The first season finale aired on June 8, 2010.
On August 28, 2010, the broadcaster commissioned a second season. The four hour-long episodes aired on June 14, 2011. In late August 2011, the BBC ordered a third season. Due to other engagements by Idris Elba and Neil Cross , however, the production had to be postponed, so that it was not broadcast until July 2, 2013. In November 2014, the BBC announced the extension of a fourth season consisting of 2 episodes. In June 2017 the BBC announced the production of a fifth season, which will consist of 4 episodes.
In Germany, ZDF secured the rights to the series in September 2010, but later passed it on to its digital sister, ZDFneo , where the first season was broadcast on Mondays from September 5, 2011. Due to the good ratings, the ZDF showed five double episodes from February 12, 2012 in its own Sunday evening program.
synchronization
The series is set to music at TaunusFilm Synchron in Berlin . Jürgen Neu writes the dialogue books and directs the dialogue.
