Lynn Paula Russell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lynn Paula Russell (born on June 27, 1949 in Whitstable , Kent , England as Lynn Paula Smith ; also known under the pseudonym Paula Meadows ) is an English draftsman, painter, actress and author. She is known for treating fetish topics (especially spanking ) in her comics, drawings and book illustrations, and as an actress in several porn films .

Life

Russell was born and raised in Whitstable , a small town on the Kent seashore . Her family consisted of her mother, her father and three sisters and is described by her as "middle class" and "very respectable". In her childhood and youth, she led a very sheltered life. At the age of about 13, on a family trip to London , she first saw a magazine in a shop window with a photo of a bare-chested woman on the front page, which she found highly shocking and obscene.

Even in her youth, Russell was active in amateur theater . She also showed artistic talent and attended the Canterbury College of Art , which she left in 1969. She switched to acting and went to London to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . In the 1970s she was a professional actress for six years, mostly at small repertoire theaters or at the open air theater in Regent's Park, London . She played Shakespeare , Shaw and Shaffer and took part in British touring performances of the musical Hair , in which she was on stage naked for the first time. She also appeared as Lynn Smith in several British series and television productions a. a. the BBC , including The Pallisers and David Copperfield (both 1974) and The Cedar Tree (1976).

Around 1970, to find out what the book was about, she first read the erotic novel History of O by Pauline Réage . She herself had never experienced corporal punishment , either in her family or at school , because the schools in her area had abolished it and her parents were opposed to it. To their surprise, the scenarios of female submission depicted in the novel aroused them. But she did not believe that she wanted to practice this type of sexuality herself. It wasn't until a few years later that she changed her mind after meeting practicing BDSM fans.

Since her acting career was not as successful as hoped, she turned back to her "first love", painting and illustration, via stage design and lighting . Her first paid job were illustrations for the 1977 children's book Beyond the Midnight Mountains , written by her partner under the pseudonym Frank Charles. She created paintings for the performances of the musical Annie at London's Victoria Park Theater . She also painted portraits of theater actors from London's West End and New York's Broadway and designed calendars and posters of Hollywood stars. The images she created for the popular Masterpiece Theater series of the American broadcaster Public Broadcasting Service were printed on the covers of television magazines.

Because of her conservative upbringing and growing up in an equally conservative environment, Russell had problems with her sexuality. Between the ages of 20 and 30, she tried constantly, but without lasting success, to suppress her sexual needs. At times she also tried to make her female body shapes (such as the female breasts ) disappear through anorexia . When she realized that this was not going to work, she decided to actively combat her sexual inhibitions and to do so openly and not in secret, because she found it hypocritical.

She felt inhibited (“repressed”) and felt the need to try things out (“to explore”) in order to discover herself. Around 1980 she began posing for nude photos in magazines. When in 1981 the English porn photographer and director Mike Freeman, who had been active since the 1960s, took advantage of a loophole in the law and began producing and distributing pornographic video cassettes in the United Kingdom with his company Videx , Russell contacted Freeman to star in one of his films.

She writes:

“I decided that I wanted to appear in a sex video. I took the plunge, enjoyed it immensely and to my utter astonishment, Paula Meadows was born. [...] This new incarnation of me didn't seem to resemble the earlier, rather timid version at all. Adventurous and insatiable, she launched herself into a new career; exhibiting herself without any shame in glossy magazines, making more films and creating new paintings out of the torrent of erotic imagery that was unleashed. I had already discovered my interest in the riding crop, the strap and the martinet, but now I found that I was not alone in my interest. "

“I decided I wanted to be in a sex movie. I took the risk, enjoyed it immensely, and to my utter astonishment Paula Meadows was born. […] This new incarnation of me did not seem to have any resemblance to the previous, rather shy version. Adventurous and greedy, she embarked on a new career; appeared naked and without shame on the pages of glossy magazines and drew new films and new paintings from the erotic flood of images that had been released. I had already discovered my interest in riding crop, belt and martinet , but now I found that I was not alone with it. "

- The Janus Collection

The first Videx title in which she played under the pseudonym Paula Meadows was Truth or Dare . The script was written by her partner, the much older Irish writer and screenwriter Frank Russell (pseudonym Frank Charles), directed by Mike Freeman, and the male costar was Lynsey Rod Honey, later known as Ben Dover . Frank Russell was dissatisfied with Mike Freeman’s implementation of his script. Nevertheless, in the same year, Happy Birthday , which already took up the subject of spanking , was followed by another Videx porn film with Paula Meadows in the lead role and a script by her partner. Then, however, Paula Meadows parted ways with Mike Freeman in an argument.

In her private life she turned to spanking practices and was in the corresponding "scene" on the way. In 1982 (published 1983) her next film appearance followed in the loosely autobiographical film To Ride a Tiger , shot in Amsterdam , in which she was extensively flogged by the well-known Domina Monique Von Cleef .

A few weeks later, also in 1982, she worked for the British spanking magazine Janus for the first time , first as a photo model and then as an illustrator. Until 1986 she made numerous fetish illustrations for Janus and appeared again as a model. She summarized her memories of the time as a model and illustrator at Janus in 1996 in The Janus Collection: A Personal Anthology .

From 1984 to 1986 she stayed several times in the USA, where she starred in other porn films under the direction of Ron Dorfman (pseudonym Art Benn ), Lasse Braun (pseudonym of Alberto Ferro) and Henri Pachard (pseudonym of Ron Sullivan) before under the pseudonym Paula Meadows. In 1985, she lived in New York for six months , where she met Screw editor Al Goldstein , who interviewed her for his adult cable television show Midnight Blue . In England she starred in two other spanking films, You'll Love the Feeling (1984) and The Kane Assignment (1991).

She gained limited notoriety in the UK media around this time. She was interviewed by two journalists for her 1988 book on pornography, Porn Gold . She has been portrayed or interviewed a number of times on television shows and has also participated in talk shows on Channel 4 ( After Dark ) and British Satellite Broadcasting on topics such as pornography and spanking . From 1989 to 1992 she worked for Fessée , another spanking magazine, and from 1994 to 2002 she edited his sister magazine Februs for the publisher of Janus , for which she provided illustrations and texts and occasionally also worked as a photo model.

In 1990 she first turned to drawing erotic comics . The British comic artist Erich von Götha (pseudonym for Robin Ray), who works in this genre, established contact with a publishing house in Paris , for whom she developed a story set in the 1920s called Sophisticated Ladies with the help of her husband, who was a writer . This was followed by Vacances d'été ( Summer Holiday ) and the two graphic novels Sabina and Sabina 2 .

Since 2002 Russell has had his own website where information about herself and her work can be found. After the magazine Februs , which she published , was discontinued, she decided in late 2003 to withdraw from the spanking scene, both in private life and as an artist. Most recently (2009) she worked on the design of a set of tarot cards . Since then she has largely withdrawn from illustration in favor of painting.

Russell's drawing style is conventional. They are realistic, neatly elaborated drawings in pencil and ink, in her colored works she uses crayons and occasionally pastel, for example in a series of fantastic body landscapes ("Bodyscapes"), probably her most ambitious works in drawing, in which female bodies interact with mountains - and combine clouds into a whole. In her drawings she often appears recognizably herself, and some of her picture stories have an autobiographical background. In How I discovered CP she describes how she first encountered the world of lived BDSM in the style of the story of the O , and designed the identical scenario in Sophisticated Ladies .

In addition to comics and fetish drawings, she also made colored drawings for two educational books by David Delvin. As commissioned work for collectors, she illustrated the history of the O and designed ex-libris with positions from the Kama Sutra .

Her books were mainly published by the Erotic Print Society in London , a publisher for high-quality, short-run erotica. Her bodyscape paintings were exhibited in 1989 in a gallery in the London district of Pimlico and later in the Parisian gallery Les Larmes d'Eros , and she also took part in several group exhibitions in London galleries.
