The Märkische Schule is one of two high schools in the Wattenscheid district of Bochum . It is centrally located in the southern part of Bochum's Wattenscheid district. In 2012, 72 teachers taught 1250 students on it.
In 1873, due to the increasing hunger for education of the bourgeoisie, the council of Wattenscheid decided to establish a higher simultaneous civic school for boys, i.e. a joint secondary school for students of Catholic, Protestant and Jewish creeds . The school opened on May 6, 1873 with 21 students. In 1875 it got its own building on Hochstrasse. Towards the end of the 19th century, the school was recognized as a fully-fledged grammar school, which in 1904 the first pupils left with the Abitur.
After the Second World War , the school was in disrepair. In 1958, the new school building was therefore erected on Saarlandstrasse. In 1998 the school was expanded to include a new building for secondary level II and grade 10. Attached to the school is the Wattenscheid town hall , which is also used as a venue by the Märkisches Kino, a school project that is unique in Germany, and Wattenscheid's only film theater.
Today the school is supported by two associations: the Association of Parents and Friends of the Märkisches Gymnasium eV and the Association of Former Pupils and Friends of the Märkische Schule Wattenscheid eV
Since 2009, the school has been an elite sports school and specializes in an elite football school.
There are also many project opportunities on the part of the school such as an exchange project with a high school in Bartow , Florida and a Lycée in Bressuire , France.
