Positions on the liturgy

Winfried Haunerland defends the Mass celebration, which was renewed after the Second Vatican Council, in the form reformed in 1970 against its critics. The new form of the liturgy is to be assessed positively, since it has led to a much larger community formation; the liturgy has been changed again and again in the course of church history, whereby the spirit of the respective time has also played a role. Nevertheless, the liturgy is not something that can be changed freely, but always a matter for the Church. Pope Benedict's Motu proprio Summorum Pontificum , with which the pre-conciliar form of the Mass was once again permitted, is considered by Haunerland to be an innovative solution, since two stages of the Roman rite can now be carried out. However, he warns against misunderstanding the Pope's letter to the effect that the pastor is now free to use the old rite to have a missionary effect on his community; rather, the extraordinary form is only to be selected upon express request and for demarcated groups.
