Unterstolberg or Mühle is a district of Stolberg (Rhld.) In the Aachen city region with around 5,799 inhabitants (as of 2017). Together with Oberstolberg it forms the inner city of Stolberg.

geography

Unterstolberg is the administrative term for mill . In terms of local politics, Unterstolberg is the Mühle district and the Rathausstrasse area with the Bastinsweiher and the town hall. Mühle / Unterstolberg is located in the Stolberger Valley and is traversed by the Vichtbach . history

Since the 16th century the mill belonged to parts of the subordinate rule Stolberg, the imperial abbey Kornelimünster and the office of Eschweiler . Since the French rule from 1794 to 1814 Unterstolberg belonged completely to Stolberg. The Eschweiler-Stolberg border ran up to the bypassing of Donnerberg to Stolberg in 1935 in the area of ​​the lower Donnerberg and today's Bergstrasse.

Surname

The term mill is still more common in colloquial language in terms such as on the mill / the mill and in the dialect as Mölle than Unterstolberg. The local carnival club is also called KG Mölle . The name goes back to the former water-powered copper mills that were found here in large numbers.

Numerous copper yards have been preserved on the mill and in Unterstolberg . Viewed from the south, these are the Kuperhöfe Grünenthal, Steinfeld , Rosenthal, Roderburgmühle, Stöck, Weide and the most northerly courtyard known as the Untersterhof and which was nicknamed Burg Bleibtreu in the 1930s. As a remnant of the dewatering, the Bastinsweiher has been preserved as a former reservoir and is still connected to the copper yards via underground canals. To the east of the pond is the Flora park as a local recreation zone with a playground.

The representative building of the former Vinzenzheim children's home is located on Frankenthalstrasse. Today the city library and adult education center are housed there.

The Städtische Ritzefeld-Gymnasium is located in Ritzefeldstrasse , which as a former girls ’s high school has been co-educational since 1976. The district's primary school is located on Hermannstrasse. The city library, the Frankental cultural center and the Evangelical parish hall can be found in the Frankentalstrasse area.

The Catholic Church of St. Mary of the Assumption rises in the center of the district on Salmstrasse. It was founded in 1853. A generous renovation by an unknown architect began in 1883 and was completed in 1895 with the construction of the two towers. A building inscription from 1853 and the old stone clock face of the tower clock are on the north facade of the church. Since 1888 it has been an independent parish. The tall spiers were destroyed in the Second World War and then only renewed in a greatly shortened form. In 1988 the Evangelical Community Center was opened in Unterstolberg. It has been the first ecumenical community center in North Rhine-Westphalia since 2013. In 1993 a mosque was established in Blaustraße. Since 1995 it can be found together with a Muslim cultural center in Rathausstrasse.
