The M1 motorway ( English for, M1 ') connects the two largest cities of Ireland , the Irish capital Dublin and Belfast , the capital of Northern Ireland . The highway is 72 km long; its last section of 16.3 km was opened on June 27, 2003.

The upgrade of the old N1 to the standard of a modern motorway cost around 700  million euros . The European Union contributed 270 million euros to the construction costs. The traffic volume is up to 68,000 vehicles a day on the bypass of Dublin Airport.

The expansion to the motorway was not only necessary to maintain the flow of traffic. There were also many accidents between motor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists on the N1, which now occur less frequently due to the rectification of the traffic situation. The many property entrances on the N1 had also greatly increased the risk of accidents on the busy route.
