The European route 1 ( E 1 ) is a European long-distance connection that runs from the port of Larne in Northern Ireland via Dublin and Valença to Seville in Spain. The Europastraße is 2,509 kilometers long and runs in two unconnected sections. The northern section runs on the east coast of Northern Ireland and Ireland , the southern on the west coast of Spain and Portugal .

The Ponte 25 de Abril and the Puente Internacional del Guadiana are spectacular bridges .

Northern Ireland and Ireland

In Northern Ireland, the E 1 begins at Larne Harbor. From Larne, the E 1 runs on several motorways and A-roads to Belfast and Lisburn .

The E 1 then continues along the east coast of Ireland . From the Northern Irish border, the E 1 leads over several motorways and national primary routes to the capital Dublin . Further on via the N11 and M11 , the E 1 temporarily ends in Wexford , as there is no direct ferry connection for the rest of the European route 1.

Spain and Portugal

In the further course, the European route 1 runs along the west and south coast of the Iberian Peninsula through Spain and Portugal .

In Spain and Portugal, the E 1 only runs on several motorways .

In Spain, the E 1 starts in Ferrol as the Autopista AP-9 , which leads over several bridges and tunnels at Tui to the Autovía A-55 . From Valença on the Spanish-Portuguese border, the route leads via Porto and past the capital Lisbon and over the Puente Internacional del Guadiana to Spain, where it crosses the border on the south coast. The second section in Spain runs as Autovía A-49 to Seville .
