Messier 96 = NGC 3368 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SAB (rs) ab in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic , which is an estimated 36 million light years away from the Milky Way . It is similar in size and mass to the Milky Way and has an active galaxy core .
The galaxy is the namesake of the M96 group, which also includes Messier 95 , Messier 105 and some smaller and weaker systems.
The object was discovered on March 20, 1781 by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain .
