Mačvanska Mitrovica ( Serbian - Cyrillic Мачванска Митровица ) is a small town in the Opština Sremska Mitrovica in the Okrug Srem in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina . In the 2002 census, the city had 4072 inhabitants. At the 1991 census, there were 3,788 residents. While at the first results of the 2011 census, 3873 people lived in Mačvanska Mitrovica.
Surname
The town of Mačvanska Mitrovica has had several names in history. Mačvanska Mitrovica means Mitrovica of the Mačva (region) , in Serbia there are also the cities of Sremska Mitrovica in the region of Syrmia and Kosovska Mitrovica in the Serbian province of Kosovo .
Until 1918 the city was called Podrinska Mitrovica . The city is also known in Serbian under the names Mala Mitrovica (Klein Mitrovica), Mitrovica and Srpska Mitrovica (Serbian Mitrovica). In Hungarian the city is called Szenternye .
geography
The city is located in the Opština Sremska Mitrovica , in the Okrug Srem . Only Mačvanska Mitrovica and 5 neighboring villages are to the south (right) of the river, while most of the municipality of Sremska Mitrovica is on the left bank of the Sava. Mačvanska Mitrovica and the neighboring villages of Noćaj , Salaš Noćajski , Radenković , Zasavica I and Zasavica II are the only parts of Vojvodina that are in the Mačva region.
In addition, these localities are the only example of the pre-war territory (before 1918) in the Kingdom of Serbia ( Central Serbia ) which became part of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. They lie south of the Save, while the rest of Vojvodina consists of the regions of Syrmia , Banat and Batschka and lies north of the Save. The city is located on the southern (right) bank of the Save .
Opposite is the city of Sremska Mitrovica , capital of the Syrmia region . Mačvanska Mitrovica and Sremska Mitrovica are, as they are only separated by the Save , twin cities and an urban area. The city is around 37 km from Novi Sad and 70 km from Belgrade .

history
Mačvanska Mitrovica is mentioned for the first time when Serbia belonged to the Ottoman Empire . In the town there is a monument in gratitude for St. Amvrosij, on whose memorial day in 1850 the plague epidemic ended. In 1938 the city was hit by a small flood , but it hardly caused any damage.
Opština Mačvanska Mitrovica
Until 1965, the town was the seat of Opština Mačvanska Mitrovica. This municipality consisted of the settlements: Zasavica I , Zasavica II , Mačvanska Mitrovica , Noćaj , Radenković , Ravnje and Salaš Noćajski . When the municipality was dissolved, the entire area, the former municipality of Mačvanska Mitrovica, became part of the municipality of Sremska Mitrovica .
religion
The majority of the city's residents belong to Orthodox Christianity , most of them profess to the Serbian Orthodox Church . 47 Catholics and 3 Muslims live in Mačvanska Mitrovica . In the center of the city near the Sava is the Serbian Orthodox Church for the transfer of the relics of St. Nicholas .
Sports
In the city of Mačvanskoj Mitrovica, the football team FK Podrinje has existed since 1922 , which plays with average success in the lower leagues of Serbian football . The Mačva volleyball club has existed since 2006 . The club is headed by sports professor Branimir Žilić and trainer Stanislav Savić . The club consists mainly of school children. The volleyball club is not only actively involved in promoting and popularizing volleyball, but also tries to instill a healthy lifestyle, respect for people and nature in the children . In addition, the club also helps the younger generations to orientate their lives correctly.
