The Machaguay District is located in the Castilla Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on November 4, 1889. It has an area of 247 km². The 2017 census counted 546 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1304, in 2007 911. The district administration is located in the 3150 m high village of Machaguay with 262 inhabitants (as of 2017). Machaguay is 47 km north of the provincial capital Aplao .
Geographical location
The Machaguay district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the central west of the province of Castilla. The area is drained south to the Río Colca .
The Machaguay district is bordered on the southwest by the district Tipán , the west by the district Viraco , in the northwest on the district Salamanca ( province Condesuyos ) in the north and northeast on the district Andagua , in the far east to the district Ayo and the southeast by the Uñón district .
