Madge Ryan (born January 8, 1919 in Townsville , Queensland , † January 9, 1994 in London , England ) was an Australian actress .

Life

Ryan was already an established stage actress in Australia when Laurence Olivier brought her to London's West End in 1957 with the original cast of Summer of the 17th Doll . After great success in London, the play was performed on Broadway in early 1958 . After 29 performances she returned to London and played at the Old Vic Theater in Shakespeare productions such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet as well as the title role in Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children .

In the 1960s she starred in various television films and series such as Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone and Simon Templar . She also appeared in Ted Kotcheff 's first feature film Tiara Tahiti on the side of James Mason . In the 1970s she was seen in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy, among others. She had her last feature film appearance in 1993 with a small supporting role in the British comedy film And Forever, the heirs sneak alongside Eric Idle and John Cleese . Until shortly before her death she was still in Medea next to Diana Rigg on the stage of the Wyndham's Theater in London's West End. Madge Ryan died one day after her 75th birthday, on January 9, 1994 in London .
