The Madiz is a 55 meter long steel yacht with a 2-screw drive. The yacht was built in 1902 at the River Clyde shipyard in Scotland. In 2006 it achieved a record in shipbuilding: it is the oldest ship in the world with the "+ 100A1" class in the Lloyd's ship register .

history

The Madiz was designed by GL Watson , a pioneer in the field of yacht design, who ran the first designer office for exclusive yachts. He designed some of the most successful America's Cup yachts. The Madiz is the last existing ship that was designed by him personally. At the beginning of the 20th century, 25% of all ships worldwide were built here.

The Madiz is the only ship in the world that has been registered in the Lloyd's ship register for more than 100 years. After more than 137 years, the Madiz is the only iron-built ship that has survived a service life of more than 100 years.

The yacht was built by the Ailsa Shipyard under the name Triton . The first owner was the philanthropist James Coats junior. After his death in 1913, the ship was bought by Sir George Bullough , owner of the Isle of Rùm , and renamed Rhouma .

From October 1914 to October 1919 the Rhouma was chartered out for patrol trips . In 1920 the ship was registered on Vincent SE Grech in London .

In 1923 the ship was extended by the Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Greenock and provided with an upper cabin deck. The drive machines were converted to oil firing in the course of this conversion. In 1924 the ship was registered under Captain C. Oswald Liddell in Chepstow and renamed Osprey .

In 1929 the ship was registered on T. Sackville Manning in London. In 1934 it was registered on WD Wills, MP in London. In the same year it received electrification and thus electric light.

In 1938 the name Rhouma was entered in the shipping register. In reality, however, the ship's name Hiniesta was used. In 1939 the ship was registered to Sir Frederick Preston, GP, KBE, JP in Salisbury . Now the name Hiniesta has also been officially entered in the Lloyd's ship register.

During the Second World War , the Royal Navy ship served as a royal yacht for King George VI , Queen Elizabeth and then Elizabeth II for various occasions. During this time the Madiz was used to develop the radar . Attempts and tests were carried out to calibrate and develop the HF / DF radio compass - a forerunner of today's radar.

In 1950 the ship was registered with Sir Frederick Preston and in 1951 with Benjamin Meaker in London. In 1953 the ship was registered on Steam Yacht "President Roberts", Inc., - c / o The International Trust Company of Liberia , Monrovia , and renamed President Roberts .

In 1954 the ship was registered to Camper & Nicholsons Ltd., Southampton , and renamed again to Hiniesta . In 1955 the ship was sold to North Marine & Industrial Consultants Ltd. in London, 1964 to North & Partners, Ltd. registered in London.

In 1970 the ship is registered on C. Keletchekis in Athens , Greece . He remained the owner for the next forty years, sometimes with various different companies and shipping companies. In 1971 the ship was registered with KM Corporation (Monrovia), c / o A. Sahinis, Piraeus , Greece. The ship's home port was Panama . In 1972 the registration followed Kostas Keletsek - c / o Ross Persian Sea Foods Corp., Tehran , Iran . The ship was renamed Madiz .

In 1975 the ship class was no longer officially registered. The owners did not want publication. The last entry in the yacht register is dated 1977.

In 2004, the ship was registered with Prince Trading Corp., Monrovia, and returned to Lloyd's shipping register.

Others

In 1989, the yacht served as the setting for the episode Murder on the High Seas from the English series Agatha Christie's Poirot with David Suchet .

construction

The Madiz is a classic yacht. Most of the decks, the planking and the interior fittings are still in their original condition. They consist of Burmese teak , Cuban mahogany in the owner's cabin and massive oak planking in the reception area.

Originally the ship was powered by two steam engines. In 1975 these were replaced by diesel engines from MTU -Mercedes- Maybach . In addition, air conditioning and satellite communication systems were retrofitted.

Currently, has Madiz a diesel powered 6-m- tender boat , a speedboat Riva "Super Florida," a RIBs inflatable with a 35-horsepower outboard motor and a jet ski .
