Life

Malcolm Joseph Bosse grew up in Moline , Illinois .

After studying literature at Yale University in 1950, he made his master's degree at the University of Michigan in 1956. This was followed by service with the US Navy in Vietnam , where he wrote his first novel Journey of Tao Kim Nam in 1959 . Some sources also report a service in the merchant navy in Asia . Malcom later taught J. Bosse between 1969, the year he did a Ph.D. in Literature from New York University , and in 1992 English Literature from City College of New York in Manhattan .

In the 1970s in particular, he also emerged as the commentary editor of the works of Daniel Defoe , Charles Gildon, Mary de la Rivière Manley and Jonathan Swift .

The actions of his - mostly historical - novels often take place in Asia, for example in China , Indochina or India . He is known for successful staging of fictional characters against a historically proven background and comprehensive depictions of both the historical and cultural circumstances of the time he describes. Almost all of his works have been translated into German since 1974, just as they were published in English, and have been reprinted by various publishers. For his book Ganesh or a New World ( ISBN 3423078502 ) he received the German Youth Literature Prize in 1983 in the youth book category .

Malcolm J. Bosse was married a total of three times. No details are known about the marriage and the duration of the marriage with Janet Cowan. He was married to Marie-Claude Aullas from 1969 until the divorce of unknown date. There is a child from this marriage. His last marriage to Laura L. Mack, who also had a child, lasted from 1996 until his death. He died of esophageal cancer on May 3, 2002 at the age of 75 .

review

Rudolf Herfurtner wrote in 1982 about the Ganesh , which is generally praised by German religious educators : “Malcolm J. Bosse makes his pedagogical intentions clear, yet unobtrusively, to the reader. The professor of literature at New York University wants to convey three things: an understanding of a distant land, the principles of Satyagraha, Gandhi's non-violent resistance, and a gentle criticism of the behavior of American teenagers. (...) 'Ganesh' is a rather quiet book, which creates its fascination with the precise atmosphere, until finally in the third part the external tension provides drive. Even if some people are strongly idealized, Ganesh is a successful amalgamation of Eastern philosophy and way of life with environmental conflicts of the western sphere, told as a coherent story of a captivating figure of identification.
