Manfred Gehmert

Manfred Gehmert (born November 1, 1931 in Demmin ; † June 25, 2020 in Neubrandenburg ) was a German officer, most recently lieutenant general of the East German NVA .

Life

Manfred Gehmert grew up in a working-class family and completed an apprenticeship as an electrician after attending primary school. From 1947 to 1949 he worked as a dismantling worker in Demmin. On December 1, 1949, he joined the German People's Police . In 1949 and 1950, Gehmert was trained as an officer in the main training administration (HVA) at the Rostock VP School . In 1950 and 1951 he was deployed as a platoon leader in the Brandenburg-Hohenstücke VP readiness . From 1951 to 1952 he was a student at the officers' school in Dresden . This training was followed from 1952 to 1956 by the assignment as company commander and deputy battalion commander in the CIP ready-to-use Hohenstücke. In 1953 he became a member of the SED .

From 1956 to 1957 he was deployed as a battalion commander in the KVP readiness Oranienburg , which on March 1, 1956 became the 1st infantry regiment of the NVA. In 1957 and 1958 he studied at the College for Officers in Dresden. Immediately afterwards, he was deployed as the 1st deputy commander of the 1 motorized rifle regiment in Oranienburg and in 1960 as the regimental commander of the 3 motorized rifle regiment in Hohenstücke. In 1964 he was transferred to Moscow to study at a military academy of the armed forces of the USSR. He finished his studies in 1967 with a diploma as a military scientist. After completing his studies, he was deployed again as the commander of the 27th Mot.-Rifle Regiment of the 8th Mot.-Rifle Division in Schwerin- Stern Buchholz . From 1968 to 1971 he was 1st Deputy Commander of the 8th Motorized Rifle Division Schwerin, before he went back to study in the USSR in 1971 at the Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR "Voroshilov" in Moscow. In 1973 he successfully graduated with a diploma as a military scientist. From September 1973 he was deployed as commander of the NVA's 9th Panzer Division in Eggesin . In 1977 he became the deputy chief and chief of staff of Military District V in Neubrandenburg. On October 7, 1977, Manfred Gehmert was appointed major general. In 1979 he then took the position of chief of this military district in Neubrandenburg. On March 1, 1981, he was promoted to lieutenant general.

From June 1986 to March 1990 he was a member of the People's Chamber and a member of the Committee on National Defense.

At the end of 1986, Gehmert handed over his military district to his successor Major General Horst Sylla . He himself succeeded Lieutenant General Hans Wiesner as head of the "Friedrich Engels" military academy . There he was also appointed full professor and replaced on March 1, 1990 by Lieutenant General Hans Süß . From April 1990 until his release on September 30, 1990, he served with the chief of the NVA's main staff in Strausberg . Like most professional soldiers in the NVA, Gehmert was not accepted into the Bundeswehr in the course of German reunification .

He last lived near Neubrandenburg.
