MANNdat e. V. - Gender Political Initiative is a German association founded in 2004 with headquarters in Stuttgart . It sees itself as an independent, non-partisan advocacy group for male citizens with the aim of eliminating legal disadvantage and public discrimination against men. He sees himself as critical of feminism, but not as a counter-movement to feminism . Social scientists count MANNdat among the protagonists of the anti-feminist men's rights movement in German-speaking countries.

Goals and Activities

The association sees four priority problem areas in which grievances must be made known and eliminated. These include discrimination against men through health policy , a one-sided educational policy aimed at promoting girls and women . a. Boys are graded worse for the same school performance, a labor market policy which , according to the association, ignores a dramatic increase in male unemployment in particular, and a paternalistic legal practice in family and divorce law issues . Another focus of the association's work is to show that women are just as violent as men.

The association offers a public discussion forum on the topic of men's rights on its website and provides data, statistics and studies for free use and dissemination in the media, including on school problems for boys and girls. He also writes petitions on male-specific issues and exchanges letters openly with politicians and authorities. Members of the association appear as speakers at panel discussions and seminars, for example in March 2007 Bruno Köhler as youth policy spokesman at the Evangelical Academy Tutzing on the subject of boys - the weak, strong sex . To the father's awakening for children e. V. there are friendly relationships.

Public response

The Neue Rheinische Zeitung interviewed the board of the association about its study Boys and Men in Germany 2007 . 3sat reported on MANNdat's activities as part of a report on Jungs auf der Kippe . The world reported on the club and its positions. Der Spiegel mentioned the association in a 2004 article on the subject of boys' school performance. Statistics on educational topics provided by MANNdat were cited in one article each in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the PT Magazin .

Eugen mouse discussed as a representative of the association in the WDR telecast west.art among others, Thomas Gesterkamp and Barbara Sichtermann about crisis of men . The current chairman of the association, Bruno Köhler, was represented in 2007 as an expert in boys' education in the context of a public hearing by Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg on the subject of promoting boys in schools . At the invitation of the Greens, he gave a lecture on the question Does the school show consideration for the young? .

classification

The political scientist Thomas Gesterkamp sees one of the main men legal groups in the society and gives the number of members to 350 for the year 2009. The association meticulously searches for alleged feminist privileges and regularly confronts parliaments with relevant inquiries. He feels ignored and disregarded and deduces from this that he cannot be selective about where and in what context his own concerns emerged, which, for example, prompted former board member Eugen Maus to interview the Junge Freiheit . Nevertheless, Gesterkamp sees "a real core" in some of the articulated men's political issues such as men's health, violence against men and boys' difficulties in the school system and calls for critical self-reflection in order to achieve a clear distinction from right-wing extremist organizations and publications.

The vocabulary and procedures of men's rights activists who articulate themselves on boy politics in organizations such as MANNdat, Agens and IGAF and the associated forums sometimes resembled right-wing extremist strategies, writes educator and gender researcher Reinhard Winter . They should not be underestimated because they take up popular moods and intensify them. Their enemy images ( the feminists), conspiracy theories (“gender infiltration”) and their polemics are harmful to “serious boy politics”. Other critics consider the association's portrayal of men as victims of discrimination to be excessive.

The sociologist Hinrich Rosenbrock examined the websites of men’s rights activists on behalf of the Heinrich Böll Foundation . Besides agens e. V. and the Internet forum WGvdL.com ( How much “equal rights” can the country tolerate? ) As one of the most important groups in the German anti-feminist men's rights movement . Rosenbrock assumes that "MANNdat is a relatively small association".

The association restricts itself to “lobbying for men's rights” and emphasizes “male discrimination in order to defame gender equality policy as being hostile to men”. He gives himself the impression to stand up for men's rights, but this is paired with anti-feminism and the idea that "we [men] are fundamentally more oppressed than women". He tries to install a male victim ideology in public. In some cases, targeted provocation is used. Rosenbrock sees MANNdat in the moderate wing of the anti-feminist men's rights movement with good connections to extreme actors such as the IGAF (“Interest Group Antifeminism”) or parts of wgvdl.com, who disregarded the principle of equality in the Basic Law and allegedly sometimes called for violence. Eugen Maus, founding chairman of MANNdat: "It is the problems that unite us, and not certain beliefs." In addition, the association blames issues on feminism that exist completely independently of it. Rosenbrock cites military or alternative service as an example , which was established entirely without the involvement of feminism.

Robert Claus sees the presentation of the boy reading list of the association a "positive interpretation of traditional masculinity attributes" which einnähmen a large weight in the masculinist discourse.

Markus Theunert assigns the association to the anti-feminists active in German-speaking countries. While other anti-feminist organizations reject any form of gender politics, MANNdat actively calls for more male politics. Every statistical difference between women and men is interpreted as a deliberate disadvantage of men. MANNdat criticizes the fact that there are more labor market-specific measures for women, although the unemployment rate for men in 2010 was 0.4 percentage points and thus more than 5% higher. Disturbing facts would be hidden, such as B. the fact that more women than men are not included in the statistics because of low-wage jobs and low working hours.

Martin Rosowski , former chairman of the Federal Men’s Forum , in which 32 organizations have come together (as of May 2020), said in an interview with the magazine Emma (January 2011) about men’s rights activists that the Federal Forum has nothing to do with organizations like MANNdat and Agens have - "even if they are currently making massive membership applications". Rosowski criticized men's rights activists and accused “MANNdat & Co.” of making “hateful tirades” against gender mainstreaming and failing to recognize “that gender mainstreaming is a super tool for us to point out exactly such things. Namely handicaps, barriers and blockages for a holistic life plan for men too. "
