Thomas Gesterkamp (2012)

Thomas Gesterkamp (born November 25, 1957 in Leverkusen ) is a German social and political scientist as well as a freelance journalist and author . It deals with research on men and fathers as well as gender and men's politics , its thematic focus is on male-gender roles and their changes in the world of work and society.

Life

Thomas Gesterkamp studied sociology , education and journalism at the Hamburg University and the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . From 1984 to 1986 he worked as an editor for the "left-wing intellectual" Stadtblatt in Münster.

Gesterkamp has been working as a freelance journalist and book author since 1986. He went to Cologne in 1986 , where he co-founded a journalists' office for independent journalists, where he worked until the beginning of 2000. After that he decided on a home office, as he saw the economic concept of freelance office communities as outdated, but also for family reasons as the father of a then nine-year-old daughter.

In 2004 he received his doctorate in political science with Christoph Butterwegge at the educational science faculty of the University of Cologne on the topic of male work and life styles in the information society . His dissertation was published in the same year as a book under the title The Crisis of Guys , in 2007 a revised new edition was published.

Gesterkamp has taught at various universities on the subjects of the labor market , welfare state , family policy and gender . He works with the men's fathers forum in Cologne, the Forum Men in theory and practice of gender relations in Berlin and is co-founder of the expert association fathers experts network Germany . He has published several books and has written several book chapters, as well as a variety of articles for journals, newspapers and radio. He is also active as a speaker, lecturer and moderator in further education as well as at lecture and discussion events in the entire German-speaking region, for example at the 2007 symposium on gender dialogues of the Gunda Werner Institute of the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Men's Forum in Berlin , 2011 at the Austrian Men's Conference in Graz and 2012 at the Men's Policy Conference jointly organized by the German Federal Ministry for Family and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Labor, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection. Men's political contributions to a gender equitable society in Berlin.

Thomas Gesterkamp has a daughter and lives with his family in Cologne.

Work and positions

Thomas Gesterkamp works and publishes mainly on the topics of new men and ... fathers , men's politics and anti-feminism ; he is often referred to as a "male researcher". In his main work, Crisis der Kerle (2004/2007), he dealt with the male lifestyle and the changes in the working society, the upheavals of which he also described as a crisis of male identity. In colloquial terms, work is equated with gainful employment , although reproductive work and activities such as care or upbringing are usually also work and a "mainstay of our society": "The normal employment relationship for men has always been based on the fact that a good soul was in the background."

In his expertise for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Gender Struggle from Right (2010), Gesterkamp examined the question of how “men's rights activists and family fundamentalists (...) radicalize themselves against the enemy image of feminism”. He examined the leading German media such as Spiegel and the FAZ as well as blogs, forums and actors of the men's rights movement and thus stimulated the public discussion about a new anti-feminism in Germany and Switzerland. Among other things, Die Zeit devoted a detailed article to her under the title The Rhetoric of Right-Wing Men .

Walter Hollstein and authors like Matthias Franz , who were mentioned in the report on gender struggle from the right , as well as others, saw Gesterkamp's analysis as an unproven defamation.

In his lecture at the Austrian Men's Conference (2011), he doubted that there would be a “guys crisis”. Contrary to the assertion of anti-feminists and men's rights activists that men's concerns are not heard by the public, these have been a constant topic in the leading media in recent years: “The constant complaint that men are systematically excluded because of their gender has itself become part of a male victim discourse. “Gesterkamp pleaded for a differentiated view of the gender discourse: White middle-class men are usually not in a crisis, but declassified men of the lower class, whom he meant by the formula“ crisis of the guys ”. The general assertion that “boys are educational losers” is similarly wrong, which is generally not true for male students from middle-class families. In spite of poor school-leaving qualifications in some cases, studies have shown that boys have better career opportunities than girls in recent years. His conclusion was: “The struggle for equality and equal political structures is a struggle against hegemonic structures of masculinity, but not against 'men'. And 'feminism' is certainly not to blame for everything. We can only change something together and in dialogue with women. "

In Beyond Feminism and Antifeminism (2012), Gesterkamp calls for “a representation of male perspectives and interests that cannot be reduced to an appendix of women's politics and the advancement of women”. In the practice of gender politics , a way of thinking that equates gender issues with women's politics prevails. A real men's policy must intervene in the gender dialogue as an independent representation of male interests and perspectives and can thus make a contribution to gender equality policy. The “men's rights movement directed against women and their institutions”, on the other hand, is a mistake.

Trivia

In a satirical report from 1984 on the swearing-in of the mayor of Münster, Jörg Twenhöven , Gesterkamp described a wooden cross in the town hall as a “Christian fetish ”. This triggered a discussion about the local political influence of the Catholic Church in Münster and the limits of the freedom of the press.
