geography

Geographical location

Mappach is located in the southernmost part of the Markgräfler hill country , the Markgräfler Tertiary hill country . While Mappach is now off the beaten track, it was historically located on an overland connection, called Alte Poststrasse , between the Kalten Herberge and Basel (Poststrasse Basel-Kalte Herberge-Freiburg). The Mappbächle touches the center of the village in the north and flows almost 2 kilometers further on the Holzemer district in the Feuerbach in the valley floor of which the county road K6351 runs and which separates the place Mappach from its hamlet Maugenhard.

Local division

The hamlet of Maugenhard, located 2.5 kilometers east of the main town, belongs to the district of Mappach.

Neighboring places

Mappach borders in the north and east on the districts of Tannenkirch , Holzen and Wollbach in the city of Kandern . In the west, Mappach borders on Wintersweiler and Welmlingen - both also districts of Efringen-Kirchen. Egringen is another district of Efringen-Kirchen to the south of Mappach.

history

The oldest known document that mentions Mappach is dated May 27, 874 and writes the place name Madebach . The interpretation of the name is controversial. On the one hand it is derived from a personal name, on the other hand from the name Mattenbach. The hamlet of Maugenhard was mentioned on June 12th, 830 as Mauvinhart (= Mauwo forest). Both documents documented donations to the St. Gallen monastery . Here, as in all of Breisgau, the monastery lost in the 11th and 12th. Century his property as a result of his lost battle against the Zähringer .

The most important landlord and patron saint of the church was the Duchy of Basel , which successively awarded these rights as fiefs to episcopal ministerials such as the Reich von Reichenstein , Münch von Münchenstein , Münch von Landskron and von Rotberg . The Rotberg were the village lords of Mappach from 1467 to 1859 and had lower jurisdiction as a fief. The margraves of Baden-Durlach claimed sovereignty and thus the high level of jurisdiction at the latest from the beginning of the 16th century . The place belonged to the Sausenharder quarter of the Oberamt Rötteln and from 1809 to the district office Lörrach / district Lörrach .
