action

The Iorph people live far away from the human world and spend their days weaving hibiol, special cloths that serve as a written chronicle of the passage of time. They age significantly more slowly than normal people and have the ability to live for hundreds of years. Maquia, a young orphan girl, serves as an assistant to the master of the Iorph, Rashine. Maquia warns against entering into emotional bonds with other people, as she will then know what true loneliness is.

Soon after, the neighboring kingdom of Mezarte sends armed soldiers on the backs of flying dragons, the Renato dragons, to the Iorph. Unable to find the secret of their longevity, the soldiers attack, kill many Iorph and take a friend of Maquia, Lelia, as prisoner. One of the Lenato dragons falls prey to the "roach" disease and becomes mad during the attack. He gets entangled in Hibiol cloths, flees the village and drags Maquia with him, which is also caught in the fabric. After a long flight, the dragon finally crashes in a forest in the human kingdom and dies. In a tent whose owner has been ambushed, Maquia finds a newborn boy next to the drunken, semi-iorphic trader Balou, who is being held in the arms of his late mother. Not wanting to let him die, she frees him from the arms of the dead and decides to accept him as her son. She reached the village of Helm, where a peasant woman, Mido, took her in and raised her together with her two sons Lang and Deol. Maquia calls her adopted son Erial.

Time goes by and Erial has grown from a baby to a child. The kingdom of Mezarte once built its strength and reputation on the possession of the old Renato dragons, but the Renato dragons are beginning to die out as they succumb to the "roach" plague, now fewer than ten of the dragons are still alive . Fearing the inevitable loss of power and influence, the King of Mezarte tries to gain possession of another ancient and legendary power, the longevity of the Iorph, which leads to his attempt to introduce Iorph into the royal bloodline. Through a message woven into a Hibiol cloth that she finds in a shop, Maquia learns that Lelia has been forced into an arranged marriage with the Prince of Mezarte and travels with Erial on a ship to the capital of Mezarte to try to free them. On the ship she meets Krim, an old friend from her homeland, Lelia's lover, who is also planning to free Lelia. After arriving in the capital of Mezarte, the two and a handful of other Iorph attack a royal parade, and Maquia is able to free Lelia briefly, but Lelia informs her that she is already pregnant with the prince's child. Maquia flees after Lelia urges her not to take her with her. Balou, the semi-iorphic trader helps Maquia escape. Undeterred, Crimea decides to keep freeing Lelia, leaving Maquia behind. To take care of her and Erial, Maquia embarks on a lengthy job search.

A few years pass. Maquia and Erial have meanwhile moved to the heavily industrial town of Dorail, which lives off the iron smiths. Maquia works there as a waitress in a restaurant, and Erial, who is now in his teenage years and who is distancing himself more and more from Maquia due to the ever smaller age difference, is a blacksmith. Lelia, who is still in the palace of the capital, is a prisoner of the royal family, which she considers superfluous because her daughter Medmel shows no signs of carrying life-extending genes of the Iorph. Since she was born, Lelia Medmel has not been allowed to see what leaves her in despair. One day Erial and Maquia run into Lang, who is now a soldier in Mezartes army, in the restaurant. Their encounter drives Erial and Maquia further apart and causes Erial to also join the army. Shortly after he leaves, Maquia is kidnapped from her home by Crimea.

About ten years later, Erial, who is now a soldier, moved back to the capital and married Dita, a girl he met earlier in the farming village of Helm. She is pregnant with her first child. In the meantime, Crimea has won the support of the surrounding nations to conquer Mezarte and overthrow the king. Krim takes the Maquia, which is still captured, with him, and plans to reach the palace in battle in order to be able to free Lelia. After the battle breaks out, Crimea and Maquia are separated in a forest outside the capital. After a brief encounter with Erial, Maquia happens to come across Erial and Dita's house, where she finds Dita in labor. She helps deliver the baby while Erial continues fighting and is wounded in battle. Maquia then searches for Erial, finds him and says goodbye to him very emotionally before she makes her way to the palace. After Krim has found Lelia in the palace, but she refuses to leave because she does not want to see Medmel, he tries to kill her and himself, but is shot by her guardian Isor and dies. When the battle ends with Mezartes defeat, Erial returns to his house to meet his newborn daughter. Maquia frees the last living Renato dragon from the palace and flies away with Lelia. Lelia manages to meet her daughter Medmel briefly before they leave.

Many years later Maquia returns to the village of Helm and finds Erial there as an old man on his deathbed. His descendants tell her about his long, happy and fulfilled life. She says goodbye to Erial one last time when she holds his hand as he dies. Leaving home, shouldering the pain of his loss and crying as she remembers the moments in her life spent with Erial. Then she goes back to Balou, the semi-iorphic trader, and sets off with him. Despite the great pain of the loss, she realizes that love for her son brought her happiness. A post-credit picture shows the Iorph homeland being repopulated by the surviving Iorph and their descendants, including Maquia, Lelia, and the last Renato dragon.
