Maria Teresa of Luxembourg
María Teresa Mestre Batista (born March 22, 1956 in Havana , Cuba ) is the wife of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg .
Life
She was born as the daughter of José Antonio Mestre Álvarez (* 1926) and María Teresa Batista y Falla (1928–1988). Her parents left Cuba in October 1959 for New York City . A few years later they moved to Geneva , where Maria Teresa attended various schools, graduated from high school in 1975 and graduated in political science in 1980 .
Her mother tongue is Spanish, she also speaks Luxembourgish, French, German, English and Italian.

Volunteering
Maria Teresa has been a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador since 1997 and is involved in development aid . She particularly supports Muhammad Yunus , the founder of microloans , and the war victim Kim Phuc from Vietnam, who is now also working as an ambassador of goodwill. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa's concerns in development aid include looking after Aids orphans in Africa and campaigning against the use of child soldiers and human trafficking . She has been President of the Luxembourg Red Cross since the beginning of 2005 , she also chairs a Luxembourg foundation supporting cancer research and is the patron of the Luxembourg section of the SOS Children's Villages Children's Fund . She is also a member of the Paralympic Honorary Committee and campaigns against child abuse on the Internet.
Waringo affair
An audit report commissioned by the Luxembourg government in 2019 due to frequent staff changes at the court and published in early 2020 documents enormous grievances at the court of the Grand Duke. In particular, the person of the Grand Duchess Maria Teresa has come under fire. The former high-ranking Luxembourg tax officer Jeannot Waringo reveals in his report that private and institutional activities are not separated, there is a lack of accounting for expenses and expenses and so there is no separation of the financing of official tasks and the management of private goods.
