Archduchess Maria Josepha of Austria (born March 19, 1751 in Vienna , † October 15, 1767 ibid) was a princess of Austria , Hungary , Bohemia and Tuscany .

Life

Maria Josepha Gabriella Johanna Antonia Anna was born as the ninth daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Franz Stephan . Since the twelfth child of Maria Theresa was born on March 19, 1751, the feast day of St. Joseph was born, it was named Maria Josepha. She was raised together with her older sister Johanna Gabriela , with whom she had an intimate behavior. Both archduchesses did well. Johanna Gabriela died of smallpox on December 23, 1762 . Maria Josepha wept for her sister all night. A few years later, Franz Stephan died in Innsbruck on August 18, 1765 . Maria Josepha was staying in Vienna at the time, together with her younger siblings .

Ferdinand of Naples and Sicily

After the death of Isabella of Bourbon-Parma , the princess was one of the most important women at court after her mother, niece and Maria Amalia . Maria Josepha was considered “naturally pretty” and had a “certain freshness”.

When the Archduchess was twelve years old, her mother chose the Spanish Infante Ferdinand I as her bridegroom. He was 15 years old, considered poorly educated, rowdy and ruthless. His interests were primarily the female sex, as well as hunting and various other amusements. Maria Theresa wrote about this political connection: “I regard poor Josepha as a victim of politics. By the way, if she only fulfills her duties to God and her husband and cares for her soul, then I would be satisfied, even if she were unhappy. "

Her aunt Anna Charlotte von Lorraine took care of the trousseau. At the beginning of October 1767, Maria Josepha received a portrait of her fiancé adorned with diamonds. But she didn't want to marry him. Even the prospect of later becoming Queen of Naples-Sicily could not cheer up their gloomy mood. The wedding ceremony was scheduled for October 15th in Vienna's Augustinian Church .

Before the wedding, the bride traveled to Mariazell to pray for the blessings of children in front of the Madonna of Mercy. Mariazell was the official pilgrimage site of the Habsburgs.

Maria Josepha fell ill with smallpox on October 4th after visiting the imperial crypt and died on October 15th. While she was still on her deathbed, she consoled her mother that she should have left her anyway and that she would now go to heaven, where she would be much better off. Maria Josepha is buried like her sister Johanna Gabriela and 10 other siblings in the Capuchin Crypt in Vienna .

Only a week after her death, Maria Theresa decided that her next younger sister Maria Karolina , Ferdinand I of Naples, should marry in April 1768.
