occupation

Marie Brand and the Last Ride is the fifth episode of the German crime series Marie Brand . The television film with Mariele Millowitsch as chief detective Marie Brand and Hinnerk Schönemann as chief detective Jürgen Simmel was broadcast on ZDF for the first time on January 5, 2011 .

action

This case leads Commissioners Brand and Simmel to a fairground. Carl Coburg, manufacturer of high-tech roller coasters, was killed in the ghost train with an ax. Strangely enough, he had 5,000 euros in cash with him, and Bruno Teilbach, the owner of the ghost train, only recently worked as a mechanic in the victim's company. Except for traces of blood, there are no direct indications of the perpetrator, but the fact that Teilbach's son had a fatal accident while building one of Coburg's roller coasters makes him suspicious. Another motive for murder could be Coburg's brother Waldemar, who left the company 16 years ago because the new cheap railways seemed too dangerous to him. But Veronika Herrenstett, the company's designer, may also benefit from the death of her boss. Irregularities in the accounts allow this conclusion and the fact that her friend Julian Römer is a million dollar investment fraudster who has already been targeted by the fraud department. Should Coburg have found out, this would be a motive that cannot be dismissed out of hand.

While Brand and Simmel are investigating all these leads, a stranger sends a text message that he knows who Coburg's murderer is and lures the investigators into the ghost train at night. At the same time, Veronika Herrenstett also receives this SMS and the three suddenly meet. Brand learns that the money invested by Herrenstedt allegedly did not come from Coburg's company, but from Julian Römer himself, for whom she would have invested the amount. She also has an alibi for the time of the crime and is therefore excluded from the group of suspects.

In return, the showman Raino Petkanen moves into the focus of the investigation after Brand can convict him for an act of sabotage on one of Coburg's roller coasters. He is a good friend of Bruno Teilbach and feels connected to him, but he denies a murder out of friendship. Since there is no further valid evidence against him, he has to be released from custody, but he is under surveillance. In this way, Teilbach also remains under observation and a possible attack on Herrenstedt can be prevented. Teilbach is arrested and claims that he wanted to hide the ax in Coburg's company after allegedly finding it behind his ghost train. When Brand asked, he suddenly admits that he had killed Coburg. However, this can be refuted at a local appointment, because the murderer must have been at least 20 centimeters shorter in order to be able to strike a powerful blow with the ax. He admits that he saw his ex-wife Charlotte come off the ghost train and also that she threw the ax away. Brand and Simmel go to her and it turns out that she killed Coburg because, in their opinion, he was responsible for the death of her child, but Veronika Herrenstett had previously leaked details to her, which increased her hatred. Brand then has the designer arrested for inciting murder.

Reviews

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv says: “There is a lot of talk about immature roller coasters in 'Marie Brand and the Last Ride'. The plot is also immature, a simple Whodunit with plenty of wrong tracks. The delightful showman milieu unfortunately does not keep what it promises for the story. Still a promising crime couple from the subtle eye-wink department - but not with such cases and not without Hinnerk Schönemann's physical effort. "

The critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm give the 'thumbs up' for a lot of tension and humor and say about this new Marie Brand film: “This episode of the loose series is not exactly suspicious of the Grimme Prize, but scores with surprising twists and the opposing investigative duo, which again creates some comical scenes. ”They sum up:“ A fun crime thriller without too much caffeine. ”
