Marie Brand and the Fall of Man is the seventh episode of the German crime series Marie Brand . The television film with Mariele Millowitsch as chief detective Marie Brand and Hinnerk Schönemann as chief detective Jürgen Simmel was broadcast on ZDF for the first time on April 28, 2011 .
action
Commissioner Marie Brand and her colleague Jürgen Simmel are called to a case in which a man was killed with an iron in his apartment. During the autopsy it later turns out that the blow itself was not fatal, but that the victim was suffocated with a pillow . This is Karsten Teske, who, as a devout Christian, regularly went to church. Therefore the investigators questioned his responsible pastor Reimann. He is very committed to helping refugees and people in need in his community. For this he even took over a former brothel, which he is now making available for the homeless and as a women's shelter . Iwona Macier, the victim's friend, found refuge there after Teske abused her under the influence of alcohol. When Simmel wanted to question Macier, she ran away. Thus, a relationship act in the affect would be conceivable, but Reimann states that Ivona Macier was with him at the time of the act. However, Marie Brand seems suspicious of Reimanns' behavior and so she researches in this direction. Obviously he goes his own way to obtain the necessary financial means to renovate the former brothel. It looks as if he is pairing up the young women who seek protection from him with the pimp Uwe Kastorp. However, after Brand and Simmel discover an underground passage on the church premises that leads to a kind of treasure chamber, they are sure that Reimann will use these antiques to raise the “donation money” for his renovation projects and that he will use the women as couriers.
But this discovery does not seem to have anything to do with Teske's murder. In solving the case, the trail leads to the victim's neighbor, who admits to having killed Teske because he wanted to protect Ivona Macier, whom he had repeatedly beaten.
Georg Hirschberger, the parish sexton , disapproves of the pastor's activities. He considers a brothel, even if it no longer serves this purpose to be run under church administration, to be simply a disgrace. But he has also noticed Reimann's trade in his observations and threatens to do something about it. He consults Monsignor Jasper, the pastor's superior, who, however, declines and does not want to do anything against Reimann. So Hirschberger himself takes action and wants to strangle the pastor in order to put an end to his wicked behavior. The fact that Marie Brand joins them by chance saves his life. However, she herself is in great danger because Hirschberger is now attacking her and threatening to kill her. This can only be prevented by Simmel's courageous intervention.
Hirschberger had also suffocated Teske in his religious zeal, since he assumed that his pastor had acted "indecently" with Ivona Macier and that Teske could make this public.

Reviews
Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv says: “'Marie Brand and the Fall of Man' is the seventh mission of Mariele Millowitsch and Hinnerk Schönemann as a Cologne investigator couple. As usual, they go after the murder, which was apparently committed with an iron [...] Opposites attract. In every relationship. There is the head Marie Brand, there the body Simmel […] This thriller is less round than oblong: wrong tracks, adventurous excursions through dark corridors - the show values of the locations and the actors make this Brand-Simmel episode so attractive. The puzzle structure with a touch of Edgar Wallace keeps you in a good mood and the direction with the extreme interplay between narrowness and distant long shots keeps the 90 minutes aesthetically tense. "
The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm give the 'thumbs up' and say about this Marie Brand film: “The dialogues give the famous actors a lot of punchlines, plus there are nice tips against church morality and the Cologne building authority scandals.” They sum up: "Original, funny and wonderfully played."
