Marie Brand and the Night of Retribution is the third episode of the German crime series Marie Brand . The television film with Mariele Millowitsch as chief detective Marie Brand and Hinnerk Schönemann as chief detective Jürgen Simmel was first broadcast on ZDF on April 12, 2009 .
action
Marie Brand, commissioner of the Cologne homicide commission , is called to a crime scene where there are three bodies at the same time. As it turns out, Edwin Seibt, the managing director of a company for baby products, was shot together with his lover, Anuschka Schmidt, by the jealous wife Carola Seibt, who then judged herself. For Simmel it is the classic motif: love, revenge, jealousy and thus an extended suicide .
As in the past, Marie has her doubts again in this case. She finds some evidence that the course of events may have been different and the case has not yet been resolved. She starts investigating with her colleague Jürgen Simmel and questions the adult children of the Seibts. Marie soon suspects that Carola Seibt was already dead when her husband and his lover were shot. Antonia and her husband seem not worried and the son Hanno Seibt openly expresses his rejection of his father to the investigators.
Marie and Simmel manage to track down the detective Martin Bremer, who had shadowed Edwin Seibt on behalf of his wife. But when Marie tries to find him, he too lies shot on the ground. This increases the suspicion that Edwin Seibt and his lover were murdered by someone else. Due to the striking number of photos that the detective's son took of Anuschka Schmidt, the investigators assume that he fell in love with the girl. It is questionable whether he became a murderer because of jealousy.
Brand and Simmel first do research on Seibt's company. As things stood, the company was to be sold, which would have cost the son-in-law the job. Steffen Probst is therefore observed by Simmel. He can observe how Probst meets with the detective's son. Simmel can arrest Tom Bremer and Probst states that he was blackmailed by him. Tom Bremer denies extortion during interrogation. He took the photos on behalf of his father, but didn't kill anyone.
For Marie Brand, the solution lies with the heirs. They are not very cooperative and so Brand and Simmel have to dig into their bag of tricks. You can speak to the domestic worker Fatima. From her they learn that Carola Seibt wrote a suicide note shortly before her suicide in which she forgives her husband and releases him. Still, they can't get any closer to the Seibts, who seal themselves off and only communicate through their lawyer. However, they manage to get a CD containing files of the last photos that Tom Bremer took on the evening of the crime. There you can clearly see that Carola Seibt shot herself and that the son, Hanno Seibt, enters the room shortly afterwards. He takes the pistol and shoots his father and his girlfriend as they enter the apartment. Hanno Seibt is arrested, as is his sister, who admits she shot the detective in order to gain access to the photos that incriminated her beloved brother.

Reviews
Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv comments on this thriller: “For the third time, Marie Brand was allowed to explain the world to her somewhat inexperienced colleague Simmel. Mariele Millowitsch and Hinnerk Schönemann are two sympathetic investigators who, for once, do not have to go to the psycho-couch. The whole thing was staged in a dignified way, well played and, despite the winking of the eye, not unexciting. 'Marie Brand and the Night of Retribution' belongs to the species of step-by-step crime novels. Logic takes precedence over atmosphere, the mental hunt for the murderer precedes artistry. The authors took their time to resolve the case, and director Manuel Siebenmann vividly reminisces the night of the murder. That makes perfect sense. "
The critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm think about this new Marie Brand film: "Schönemann extends his macho role into the absurd, but the portrait of a desolate entrepreneurial family is convincing." The magazine sums up: "Exciting family tragedy in C minor ."
Tilmann P. Gangloff from Kino.de praises the thriller and writes: "The actual story [...] is less gorgeous because the staging (Manuel Siebenmann) delights too much in the cliché of million dollar decadence [...] But it doesn't matter because Millowitsch and Schönemann make such a great team; and because cameraman Daniel Koppelkamm managed a whole series of wonderfully photographed shots. "
This time, Torben Gebhardt atquotemeter.de praises “the skilful teamwork between the two main actors Mariele Millowitsch and Hinnerk Schönemann”. It goes on: “You as the perfect investigator with a flair for the details and the heart in the right place, he as a lovable but clumsy wannabe macho. An investigative duo couldn't be more different. And as unequal as they seem, they fit together perfectly [...] On the other hand, the conclusion about the guest actors Marek Harloff and Meret Becker is clearly negative. Both act very sedate, almost listless as late-pubescent children of the Seibt clan. It is a bit surprising that there is not a secondary plot about an incestuous relationship between the two. Another positive thing is that the whole TV film was given a very modern look. Starting with the very stylish opener, through to the external shoots and camera settings and cuts. ZDF on the way to a younger, more modern and more appealing future? "
