occupation

Marie Brand and Deadly Greed is the first episode of the German crime series Marie Brand . The television film with Mariele Millowitsch as chief detective Marie Brand and Hinnerk Schönemann as chief detective Jürgen Simmel was broadcast for the first time on December 18, 2008 on ZDF .

action

Marie Brand is a committed police officer and although she has been transferred from the homicide department for personal reasons, she now has to investigate a burglary with fatal consequences as a substitute for sick colleagues. When she arrives at the scene of the crime, she meets the detective superintendent Jürgen Simmel, who is initially quite unfriendly and turns her away. Nevertheless, he explains to her about the likely course of events, whereupon Marie very quickly comes to a different point of view. She is convinced that the break-in was staged as an afterthought to cover up the woman's murder. When the lawyer couple Jeanette and Joachim Fischer return home from their office opening in the evening, they are surprised that their friend Julia Aumann was already in the house because she was supposed to come the next day.

Marie Brand and Jürgen Simmel should now work on the possible murder case together. Marie finds a lead that leads to a religious community . A first survey of Laura Hatsch, one of the sect members, does not provide any concrete information. However, Marie has the feeling that the residents are hiding something from them, as is the Fischer couple, who are obviously afraid. In search of the reason for this, the investigators are researching the lawyer's previous cases. They come across a case in which Joachim Fischer represented the ominous Numa master in a trial for the death of a small child. Since then he has taken care of the sect's quite substantial finances. Jeanette Fischer confesses to the police that her husband embezzled large sums of money and that they are now afraid of Master's revenge. Marie thinks this is a bit contradictory as the sect preaches "love". But a bomb attack on Joachim Fischer increases suspicion. Therefore Marie goes to Amsterdam to meet Master there. When she meets her, Marie receives information about the sect members around Laura Hatsch and their relationships with one another. Marie concludes that Jeanette Fischer herself staged the murder of her husband in order to be free for her friend Laura Hatsch. She was supposed to shoot Joachim Fischer and accidentally hit Julia Aumann in the dark. Marie confronts Jeanette Fischer with her hypothesis, who then admits everything.

criticism

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm believe that this new Marie Brand series offers “strong female roles, polished dialogues”.

Tilmann P. Gangloff from Kino.de praises the crime thriller and writes: “The film, quickly staged by René Heisig, thrives primarily on the contrast between its two main characters, who complement each other like head and heart (or brain and body) [...] Precisely because the roles and their actors could hardly be more contradicting, they go so well together; and not only when Marie has to 'translate' Simmel's dialogues, for example. Even pure slapstick fits seamlessly into the overall picture: When Marie actually only reaches for a photo album and promptly collapses the entire shelf, it has Loriot quality. "
