Mark William Davis (born October 19, 1960 in Livermore , California ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the position of pitcher . In 1988 and 1989 he was elected to the NL All-Star-Team . In 1989 he also won the Cy Young Award of the National League (NL).

Career

Davis made his MLB debut wearing the Philadelphia Phillies jersey on September 12, 1980 at the age of 19 against the St. Louis Cardinals . In the encounter he pitched two innings and threw a strikeout and a base on balls . The Phillies lost the game 4 to 7. In 1982 Davis moved to the minor league for the Oklahoma City 89ers, a triple-A team of the Phillies in the American Association . There he made 21 appearances but could n't convince with an Earned Run Average (ERA) of 6.24. From 1984 to 1987 he played for the San Francisco Giants . In his first year for the Giants , he started in 27 games. The following season he became the Giants' primary relief pitcher . In 1988 Davis was elected to the NL All-Star Team for the first time . 1989 would be Davis's most successful year of his career, as he was elected to the All-Star Team for the second time and was awarded the Cy Young Award for his achievements (44 saves and an ERA of 1.85) . Davis signed a $ 10 million contract with the Kansas City Royals a year later , but was unable to build on his 1989 performance. After the Royals, he moved to various teams including the Atlanta Braves , the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres. However, he could not build on his performance from 1989 with these teams and he played his last game on September 28, 1997 for the Milwaukee Brewers against the Baltimore Orioles . In this encounter he pitched 23 innings and threw a strikeout. The Brewers lost the game 6 to 7.
