Markus Heinsdorff (born September 12, 1954 in Steinkirchen , Upper Bavaria ) is a German installation artist who includes architecture and photography in his work. In 2015, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his work in different countries and with different cultures .

life and work

Markus Heinsdorff grew up in Irschenhausen , south of Munich . After training and working as a goldsmith in Munich and a wood and stone sculptor near Nuremberg , he studied abstract sculpture with Jacobsen from 1976 to 1981 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich .

Nature and space are the central themes of the internationally working artist. In dealing with other cultures, projects, installations and exhibitions were created in India, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Ecuador, Brazil, USA, South Africa, Zanzibar and numerous European countries, among others as part of the UNESCO Aschberg Program with the Goethe Institutes and the Foreign Office . In his projects, Markus Heinsdorff orients himself to the local conditions of the respective country and often uses material from the area. This also applies to the numerous pavilion constructions that were realized as engineering structures and mobile spaces for the presentation of Germany in China (2007–2010) and India (2012–2013) and toured five megacities in both countries . In this context, the German-Chinese House, a 300 m², two-storey building made of bamboo was realized at the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai . The EXPO house and its other buildings are among the few self-supporting, modern structures in the world made from the natural material bamboo . Markus Heinsdorff combines natural bamboo pipes and laminates and creates new connections and construction options. The work was carried out with the support of the structural engineers and engineering offices Schlaich Bergermann und Partner , Stuttgart, Rein Ingenieure, Stuttgart and Varicon, Würzburg, W. Schachl, Munich and the universities of TU Munich , TU Darmstadt and Tongji , Shanghai. In 2011 and 2014 the books "Design with Nature - Die Bambusbauten" and "Mobile spaces - Textile Bauten" were published.

On the basis of the realized mobile rooms and pavilions, new ideas for the design and technology of low-cost buildings were created. In addition, workshops, lectures and exhibitions take place regularly in universities in different countries. At the end of 2013, the art and architectural buildings were shown for the first time as a complete exhibition in the House of Architecture of the Bavarian Chamber of Architects in Munich.

In addition to spatial projects and works with light or wind, Markus Heinsdorff has been developing a large number of installations and objects with and above water under the title water-works since 1990 . In 2008 he initiated an art and science cooperation with the hydromechanics laboratory of the Technical University of Munich. This resulted in various exhibits, including a. the object “Rotor” ( empowering people award from Siemens Stiftung ), portraits of the favela residents “about water” in São Paulo , an installation with air rings in a water column in Rio de Janeiro on the occasion of the Rio + 20 environmental conference of the United Nations , an installation for The theme of the monsoons in Bangalore and Ubud ( Bali ), as well as a sound installation with water droplets in the Max Planck House in Munich for the Long Night of the Museums . In the summer of 2016, a 10 m high wind-water tower was opened as a filling station or water station with an integrated, naturally cooled lounge in Zanzibar.
