In the winter semester of 2002 he switched to Bogomir Ecker at the Braunschweig University of Art . There he completed his studies with a diploma in 2006; in 2007 he was a master class student. Research trips to New Zealand, France and Ireland took place during the course. He lives and works in Berlin and Hanover .

Starting in the Chambers of Wonder from the late Renaissance and Baroque periods , Markus Zimmermann has developed countless small sculptures since 2003. These impress with their wealth of detail and precise design. To do this, he combined different materials such as cardboard, paper, plastic films, foam with plaster of paris, wax and paint to create new shapes. The small sculptures were presented on shelves or tables, in displays or in empty shop windows as room-filling installations.
While the objects in the Chambers of Wonder were only intended to be viewed, since 2006 Zimmermann has been inviting viewers with peep boxes to literally take their art into their own hands . The elaborately designed boxes reveal fantastic landscapes and geometric spaces when you look inside. a. remind of theater stages or the Merzbau by the artist Kurt Schwitters , who is also from Hanover . Side slits let light into the peep boxes and show the scenes from changing perspectives.
Performances have followed since 2012 . They are primarily characterized by playful interactions with the audience. Markus Zimmermann plays Mau Mau with the audience or bets for money; he destroys objects sacred to him or asks the public to create sculptures themselves. The seemingly harmless performances cite strict rituals of the liturgy and stage universal themes from mythology . In times of digital effects and the entertainment industry, Markus Zimmermann manages to create unexcited moments of mindfulness and the present. Free from ideological platitudes , he puts Joseph Beuys' views and demands on social sculpture into practice.
Since 2013 Markus Zimmermann has also been the initiator of projects in overarching art genres. In 2013, for example, the Art Fund Foundation sponsored the WORLD WITHOUT TIME project , a twenty-four-hour performance with 12 artists in the former Czech cultural center in Berlin. As a team he develops and supervises the IKONOSTASE project in Munich, Berlin and at CeBIT in Hanover.
Zimmermann was one of the founders of the Berlin Art Club in 2006. In 2013 Florian Dietrich, Martin Schepers and Markus Zimmermann founded the artist collective IKONOSTASE.
Scholarships
