Today, Marobo is divided into the three Sucos Atu-Aben , Ilat-Laun and Soileco . To the south are the Sucos Malilait , Lourba and Maliubu , which also belong to the administrative office of Bobonaro . In the west is the administrative office of Maliana , in the northwest the administrative office of Cailaco (both municipality of Bobonaro) and in the east the administrative office of Atsabe (municipality of Ermera ).
The Marobo River also flows from Marobo to Lóis, which has water all year round .
Residents
In 2015 the three sucos had 3,931 inhabitants (1970: 3,324). The majority of the population belongs to the Kemak ethnic group. There are also small minorities of the Bunak and Tetum Prasa speakers.
The French anthropologist Brigitte Renard-Clamagirand studied the culture of the region between 1966 and 1970.
On All Saints' Day , on November 1st, there is a festival at the hot springs.
history
The Marobo-Kemak had a small empire, but it was under the rule of the Kemak empire of Atsabe , on the periphery of which was Marobo. Here, as in neighboring Obulo , the Kemak have mixed with the neighboring Bunak ethnic group for generations , which is why there are cultural differences between the Kemak of Atsabe and Marobo.
In March 1895, Governor José Celestino da Silva led an offensive against Marobo and the Obulo , which is closely related to him , in order to finally subdue them for Portugal .
economy
During the Portuguese colonial period, a hot spring bath ( Termas do Marobo ) was built in Suco Ilat-Laun . The swimming pool, which is fed by the hot spring, still exists and is now a tourist attraction.
