Martin Lancelot Barre (born November 17, 1946 in Birmingham , England ) is a British musician. From 1968 to 2012 he was lead guitarist of the progressive rock band Jethro Tull .

Career

Martin Barre began his musical career in the band Moonraker . After Mick Abrahams left Jethro Tull, their band leader Ian Anderson played various guitarists in search of a successor, including Barre. But he initially decided on Tony Iommi (later with Black Sabbath ). But after he left the band after a short time, only Barre was invited to a second audition. This appeared with a guitar but without an amplifier; Anderson held his ear as close to the instrument as possible and was convinced despite the adverse circumstances. He can be heard for the first time with Jethro Tull on the second album Stand Up .

In addition to the guitar, Barre has also mastered other instruments, including the flute . Since the album Aqualung at the latest, the sharp riffs and extended inter- solos have become a trademark . This can be heard very clearly in the title song of Tull's album Minstrel in the Gallery . In particular, his guitar work brought Crest of a Knave the 1988 Grammy Award for Best of Hard Rock.

Martin Barre was next to Anderson the mainstay of the band. Occasionally, however, he also found time to work on his own projects. The result is now eight solo albums, one of which is a live album.

After the breakup of the band Jethro Tull, which was enforced by Anderson in 2012, this separation was final for Barre. Since then he has built up the Martin Barre Band, which plays a mixture of Tull arrangements and new compositions. Already in September 2013 Barre released the solo album Away with Words . In autumn 2013 he played with Jonathan Noyce (bass), Frank Mead (saxophone, flute, harmonica), Pat O'May (guitar), Dan Crisp (vocals, acoustic guitar) and George Lindsay (drums) under the name Martin Barre & Band on tour in Europe. In 2014, Order of Play was another studio album and Live in Munich , followed by Back to Steel in 2015 .

The former marathon runner was also active in other sports.

Barre is married. He has his own recording studio.
