Martin Schmidt (politician, 1914)
Martin Schmidt ( Reinhold Martin Schmidt ; also Schmidt-Gellersen ;) (born June 16, 1914 in Gassen ; † July 30, 2002 ) was a German farmer , politician of the SPD and long-time member of the Bundestag .
Life
As part of his training to become a qualified farmer , Martin Schmidt completed an agricultural internship in Scandinavia from 1934 to 1935 . From 1940 to 1943 he worked as an agricultural clerk in the research service and in the planning office for the annexed eastern areas, from 1943 to 1945 in the Wehrmacht .
In the immediate post-war period , Schmidt worked from 1945 to 1949 as the manager of the manor at the entrance to Parensen , leased from his father-in-law . In 1950 he took over a family owned farm and since then has been managing it, initially on 40 hectares as his main occupation , later on 30 hectares as - according to his own statement - " hobby farmer ".
politics
At the age of 35, Martin Schmidt was elected to the German Bundestag for the first time in 1949 , to which he was a member until the end of the 10th electoral term in 1987. Almost always he won the direct mandate in a federal constituency with changing names ( Northeim-Einbeck-Duderstadt , Northeim , Northeim-Osterode ), but with almost unchanged geographic scope . Only in 1957 did he enter parliament via the Lower Saxony state list .
Agricultural policy was at the center of Schmidt's political activity . For example, he was President of the Association of German Farmers - General Association of Agricultural Family Businesses, founded in 1956 . As an agricultural expert in the SPD parliamentary group , on the one hand he campaigned for subsidies for German agricultural products, on the other hand he was of the opinion that " agriculture must be given more responsibility in the market [and cannot] leave everything to the state and the bureaucrats ."
From February 27, 1958 to November 29, 1961, Schmidt held a double mandate as a member of the Assembly of the European Communities , the forerunner of the European Parliament , which emerged from the Joint Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community .
In the German parliament, Martin Schmidt was also involved in the relevant Bundestag committee , the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Forests , whose deputy chairman he held from 1961 to 1969 and whose chairman he was until 1987.
On August 14, 1974 Schmidt belonged to Ludwig Erhard , Hermann Götz , Gerhard Schröder (all CDU ), Richard Jaeger , Franz Josef Strauss , Richard Stücklen (all CSU ), Erich Mende ( FDP , later CDU), Erwin Lange and Herbert Wehner ( both SPD) to the ten members who have belonged to parliament for 25 years without interruption since the first federal election . When he left parliament in 1987, he and Richard Stücklen were the only MPs since 1949, i. H. had been members of the Bundestag for over 37 years and approx. 5 months without interruption.
After Wolfgang Schäuble , Stücklen and Heinz Riesenhuber , Schmidt-Gellersen is currently the parliamentarian with the fourth-longest term in the history of the German parliament.
