history

In 1872, James P. Comeford, an Irish immigrant, established a trading post on the Tulalip Indian Reservation . Comeford had previously been officially commissioned by the government as an Indian agent to establish trade relations with the indigenous people of the region. The Indian reservation to the west of what is now the urban area of Marysville was established by the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855. In 1874 Comeford bought 518 acres east of the Tulalip Reservation for $ 450 . The sellers of the land were Truman Ireland, John Stafford, Louis Thomas and William Renton. Comeford spent the next three years further clearing the land and making plans for a new trading post to be built. In 1878, a post office was established here at Comeford's initiative, and a year later a school district was established, although there were no children here. James P. Comeford and his wife Maria were the only residents until 1883. Among the first new settlers to arrive in 1883 were James Johnson and Thomas Lloyd of Marysville, California . At that time it was agreed that the newly founded city should also be called Marysville. Other sources say that the name was given because of the first name of Comeford's wife Maria . In 1891 the city already had 400 inhabitants and the city was officially founded with the formation of a regional authority .

In the early years of Marysville, the town's economy was heavily influenced by timber and agriculture . A large part of the cleared land was later grown on strawberries , which is why the city was nicknamed The Strawberry City in the 1920s .

By the end of the Second World War , the population of Marysville rose to around 2000 inhabitants. In the 1950s, the surrounding land was begun outside the city limits einzugemeinden . In the period from 1950 to 1980, the city's population doubled and grew to over 5000 residents. However, the population growth of the city accelerated very strongly due to the further influx of residents and further incorporations. In 2010 a population of over 60,000 was reached. Marysville is the second largest city in Snohomish County and one of the largest cities in Washington state.
