Massimo Battara (born May 3, 1963 in Genoa , Italy ) is a former Italian football player and current football coach . In his coaching role, he attaches particular importance to control of the penalty area and positional play. He has trained national goalkeepers like Júlio César and Joe Hart .
Player career
His first professional station was at FC Bologna , which he left after only one season. He then joined Viadanese, Sampdoria Genoa , SS Sambenedettese Calcio and SSD Puteolana 1902 Internapoli for one season , rather he was under contract with US Casertana for three years from 1986 to 1989. This was followed by a two-year engagement at US Salernitana . Towards the end of his active career, he joined the clubs US Lecce , SPAL Ferrara and US Sassuolo Calcio for one year each .
Coaching career
After a three-year break from professional sport, he started working for Ittihad FC as a goalkeeping coach in 1998 . In 2000 he left the club. Battara moved back to his Italian homeland. In 2001 he was responsible for goalkeeper training at SSC Napoli . He then worked from 2001 to 2002 as a goalkeeping coach at Fiorentina . He was then unemployed for two years. In 2004 he signed a contract with Inter Milan . There Roberto Mancini was the coach with whom he played at Sampdoria Genoa in the 1980s. Battara experienced his most successful years as a goalkeeping coach with the Milanese. So he was able to celebrate the Italian championship three times in a row . When Inter coach Mancini dismissed at the end of the 2007/08 season, Battara also ended his activity with the champions and joined Benevento Calcio until 2009 . When Roberto Mancini coached Manchester City in 2009 , he brought Battara to the island as goalkeeping coach. There he was once English cup winner and English champion . From October 7, 2014 to June 30, 2015 he was the goalkeeping coach under Roberto Di Matteo at FC Schalke 04 , where he completed the new coaching team with assistant coach Attilio Lombardo . There he replaced the previous goalkeeping coach Holger Gehrke . With Di Matteo's resignation from his coaching position on June 30, 2015, Battara also retired as goalkeeping coach. Simon Henzler became his successor . From July 2015 to 2016 he was the goalkeeping coach of the Indian soccer club FC Pune City . In 2016 he worked with Roberto Di Matteo at Aston Villa . When Di Matteo was fired, his successor Steve Bruce preferred another goalkeeping coach. Battara began his engagement at Zenit St. Petersburg under Roberto Mancini in July 2017 . Together with Mancini, he left St. Petersburg and began coaching the Italian national team in 2018 .
