Master of the Universe (TV and The Banker - Master of the Universe ) is a documentary by Marc Bauder from the year 2013 . The film premiered on August 9, 2013 at the Locarno Film Festival , and had its German premiere on October 28, 2013 as the opening film of the 56th International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film . The German theatrical release was on November 7, 2013.

content

Rainer Voss , a former investment banker in his early fifties who has retired, describes his very personal point of view. He tells how things went inside the banks during the upswing, what happened in the “trading rooms” and at the “deal makers” and how, in his opinion, the financial crisis could come about . He describes his views on the self-contained system of banks and on those who operate in them, who have moved further and further away from reality. Like a business journalist , he tries to illustrate even complex facts and mechanisms with pictures.

The only location for the film is a now abandoned bank building in Frankfurt's banking district .

The introduction and credits of the film are accompanied by Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata “ Tilge, Höchster, Meine Sünden ” ( BWV 1083).

Emergence

The search for a bank employee to talk about his job in front of the camera turned out to be very difficult for Bauder. He received no reply to advertisements in the relevant newspapers. He "noticed relatively quickly that without contacts one would not have access to this hermetically sealed parallel world". While doing research for his feature film project "RAZZIA", he met a member of the Bundestag. He said that he was getting advice from a high-ranking investment banker on specific capital market issues, and put Rainer Voss in touch. It was agreed that no names would be given of employees or banks that Voss worked for. He also had the right not to answer questions during the interviews.

The location was the Mainzer Landstrasse 23 building complex in Frankfurt am Main . The 13-storey bank building, almost 50 meters high, was built in 1992 based on a design by Nägele, Hofmann & Tiedemann and was originally used by the Bayerische Vereinsbank . After merging with the Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechsel-Bank and subsequent takeover, it became the Unicredit Bank . The building in which the science fiction comedy Iron Sky was filmed has been empty since 2007.

Quotes from Rainer Voss in the film

  • “I defend myself against this highly simplified notion that there are criminal elements at work who are thinking about things in order to rip other people off; we're not talking about Albanian cone players here . Instead, we talk about the fact that there are products that make sense on the one hand and - if used incorrectly - can cause harm on the other. "
  • When asked, “Is it even clear to the customer what they are buying?” Voss replied: “No, that's just a mess, yes. So I don't want to have that recorded now, please ... seriously, yes. "
  • “I also believe that people outside overestimate the role that such a dealer plays in this banking system . That's not a manager . Yes, in the end this is a chief screwdriver on the Daimler assembly line. Yes, of course the traders - junior traders, senior traders - have different limits, that is perfectly clear. But now I can't think of any other profession where you can cause such damage in such a position. You have to think of it like an upside-down pyramid: the people who can really cause damage are sitting down below. Yes, so I hope you understand that. I think there is always the idea outside that these are all people who are managing directors or have huge titles - no, they are ... Such a dealer, he paid well, yes. But in that sense he has no ... he has no responsibility other than for his limited area. They are not managers , they are ... yes, laying hens , if I had to put it badly. So it is completely normal for a trading desk in such a bank - whether it is trading in stocks or derivatives or fixed-income securities ... such a trading desk with three or four employees, so I'll say three people plus an assistant: He has the turnover and profit of a medium-sized company with a hundred employees. "
  • "The bigger the shit, the thicker the corporate social responsibility brochures."

Awards

Reviews

“Voss describes the banking world as a closed system that demands unconditional loyalty. A system that expresses its appreciation for employees with incredibly high commissions - and thus binds them to itself. "

- Thorsten Schmitz : Süddeutsche Zeitung

"Marc Baude [r] created more of a documentary sculpture and undercut the statements of his only witness with well-known and somewhat less well-known cold images of Frankfurt high-rise concrete."

- Peter Uehling : Berliner Zeitung

"A mentality study from a world that has long since decoupled from reality."
