Mattot
Mattot ( Biblical Hebrew מַּטּוֹת “ Stämme ” ) denotes a reading section of the Torah with the text Numbers / Bemidbar 30.2–32.42 (30.2–17 BHS ; 31 BHS ; 32 BHS ).
It is the reading of the 3rd or 4th Sabbath in the month of Tammuz or, if connected with mass , also the 1st Sabbath in the month of Av .
Essential content
- The text is about keeping the vows and oaths and their possible cancellation by the father or husband of a woman.
- Fight against the Midianites because, on Balaam's advice , they seduced the people of Israel into the service of Baal Peor .
- Cleansing of the warriors and equipment contaminated by a corpse and distributing the booty.
- The tribes Reuben and Gad ask Moses for the conquered land of the Amorite kings Sichon and Og and promise that their warriors should cross the Jordan with the other tribes .
