Contents sketch

The priest Pinchas (son of Eleazar) is praised in the text by God for his killing Simris from the tribe of Simeon and Kosbis and he is given a covenant of peace. God orders a second census after the previous epidemic. There are 601,730 men aged 20 and over. There are also 23,000 male Levites . Except for Moses , Caleb and Joshua , no one lives who has seen the first count.

After the daughters of Zelofhad came to Moses and asked for their inheritance, God determined an inheritance sequence: If there are no sons, the daughters inherit, otherwise the uncles or other biological relatives.

Since Moses is not allowed to go to Canaan either, Joshua is appointed as his successor and is consecrated by the laying on of hands. Instructions are given for the largest Jewish festivals and the sacrifice rules are described.

Haftara

The associated haftorah is 1. Kings 18.46 to 19.21 (18.46 BHS ; 19.1 to 21 BHS ) when Pinchas falls on a Shabbat before 17 Tammus, otherwise Jeremiah 1-2.3 (1 BHS ; 2,1–3 BHS ), so Mattot's Haftara .
