Wa'era ( Biblical Hebrew וָאֵרָא And I appeared ' - please complete: the Abraham ) denotes a reading portion ( parasha or Sidra called) of the Torah , and includes the text of Exodus / Shemot 6.2 to 9.35 (6.2 to 30 BHS , 7 BHS , 8 BHS , 9 BHS ).

It is the cider of the 4th Shabbat in the month of Tevet or the 1st Shabbat in the month of Shevat .

Essential content

  • God repeats his announcement of the deliverance of Israel.
  • The people still don't believe in it.
  • Description of the relationship between Moses and Aaron .
  • The divine command to let Israel go is repeated before the Pharaoh , with Moses' staff turning into a serpent.
  • Because the Egyptian sorcerers can perform the same miracle, Pharaoh sticks to his refusal.
  • Then follow the Ten Plagues (Hebrew collective abbreviation DeZaCh AdaSch BeAChaB):
    1. The water of the Nile turns into blood (דָֽם Dam ) (7.17 EU )
    2. Frogs (צְפַרְדְּעִֽים Zefarde'im ) (7.27 EU )
    3. Mosquitoes (כִנִּ֖ם Chinim ) (8.12 EU )
    4. Biting flies or horseflies (עָרֹ֔ב Arow ) (8.17 EU )
    5. Cattle plague (דֶּ֖בֶר Dewer ) (9.3 EU )
    6. Bumps (שְׁחִ֥ין Shekhin ) (9.9 EU )
    7. Hail combined with thunder and lightning (בָּרָ֖ד Barad ) (9.18 EU )
    The other three plagues are part of the next reading ( Bo ).

Haftara

The associated Haftara is Ezekiel 28.25–29.21 (28.25-26 EU , 29.1-21 EU ).
