Schemini ( Biblical Hebrew שְׁמִינִי 'Eighth' [= the eighth day of initiation]) denotes a reading section (called Parascha or Sidra) of the Torah and includes the text Leviticus / Wajikra 9–11 (9 BHS , 10 BHS , 11 BHS ).

It is the cider of the 4th or 5th Shabbat in the month of Nissan or the 4th Shabbat in the month of Adarscheni .

Essential content

  • As priests, Aaron and his sons celebrate the first whole and peace offering.
  • The two eldest sons Nadab and Abihu , who make an unordered fire offering in the tabernacle of their own accord, are killed by fire by God.
  • Prohibition of wine and intoxicating drinks for priests before entering the sanctuary
  • The priests and their families are to consume the breast and the club of the peace offerings made.
  • Diet laws :
    • Ruminants with split claws are allowed from cattle.
    • Those with fins and scales are allowed from aquatic animals.
    • Regarding birds, the forbidden ones are listed (including the hoopoe , which was elected national bird in Israel in 2008).
    • Of small winged animals, those with jumping feet above their feet are permitted, all others are prohibited.
  • Touching the carrion (newela), even the clean animals, if they have not been slaughtered, contaminates people, clothes, equipment etc .; However, food only if it has come into contact with water beforehand.

Haftara

The associated Haftara is according to Ashkenazi custom 2 Sam 6–7.17 (6 BHS ; 7.1–17 BHS ), according to Sephardic custom 2 Sam 6,1–19  BHS .
