Matthäus Dresser also: Dressler, Drescher, Dresserus (born August 24, 1536 in Erfurt , † October 5, 1607 in Leipzig ) was a German school humanist , educator , philologist and historian .

Life

Dresser comes from a humble background. After attending school in Erfurt and Eisleben , he began studying at the university in his hometown, where he attended lectures by Martin Seidemann. In Erfurt he has been traceable since 1558, where he acquired the academic degree of Master of Philosophy in 1559. From 1560 he taught Hebrew himself at the University of Erfurt . When the Erfurt Ratsgymnasium began to be built in 1561 , he took part and in 1562 became a professor of Greek literature there himself.

In 1575 Dresser became rector of the electoral state school St. Afra in Meißen . After six years he got a professorship for Greek and Latin languages ​​and history at the University of Leipzig in 1581 . Here he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university. He was dean of the philosophical faculty four times and rector of the alma mater in the winter semester of 1599 . Dresser wrote a number of learned Latin works. The Isagoge historica is considered to be his main work . The electoral Saxon historiographer died of malaria and was buried on October 7, 1607 in the Paulinerkirche in Leipzig . Although he internalized the principles of Melanchthon, he remained true to Lutheran theological sentiments.

Dresser had married twice. His first marriage was in 1565 with Juliane Sarcer (* 1547 in Dillingen; † August 16, 1598 in Leipzig), the daughter of Erasmus Sarcerius . His second marriage was in 1600 with Maria Cordes, the daughter of prepositus at the Leipzig University M. Henricus Cordes. Both marriages remained childless.
