He is particularly known for his public commitment in the field of business ethics .

Life and education

After graduating from high school in 1987 at the Wilhelm Raabe School in Lüneburg , Matthias Wittenburg initially signed up as a regular soldier in the army medical service in the German Armed Forces . He is a reserve officer with the rank of lieutenant colonel .

From 1991–1993 he trained as a bank clerk at Dresdner Bank AG in Hamburg. He completed his part-time banking business studies at the Open University in Hagen and Cardiff University in Wales from 1990–1992 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) . His master's thesis dealt with the topic of finance leasing . In 2010 he completed the Advanced Management Leadership and Management Program (OALMP) at Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford .

Matthias Wittenburg has been married to Sabine Wittenburg since 1996. From this marriage he has two sons, born in 1998 and 1999. The family lives in Radbruch in the Lüneburg district .

Professional background

After completing his training as a banker, Matthias Wittenburg moved to Dresdner Bank AG in Frankfurt am Main in 1993 as a syndicate manager. 1996–1999 followed a position at Lehman Brothers Bankhaus AG in Frankfurt am Main and London . In 1999, he moved to the investment banking brand of Dresdner Bank AG, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, as head of the bond syndication department , where he became Managing Director in 2002. From 2007 he was global head of several industrial sectors at Commerzbank AG in Frankfurt, and in 2009 he was promoted to Head of Corporates & Markets Client Relationship Management. In 2011 he took part in the 129th Baden-Baden Entrepreneur Talk as part of this activity.

In 2013 Matthias Wittenburg joined HSH Nordbank AG in Hamburg as a board member. There he was responsible for the Corporates & Markets department until 2016.

Entrepreneurial activity

After retiring from the Board of Management, he founded Wittenburg Corporate Finance e. K. in Radbruch, which he has been running since then. The company's focus is on advising medium-sized companies in the areas of company sales and financing .

In 2017 he worked temporarily as a strategy advisor to the commander at the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg. Since then he has also been teaching there as a lecturer in the Faculty of Politics, Strategy and Social Sciences. Since July 2017 he has been chairman of the supervisory board at diligent technology & business consulting AG in Frankfurt am Main.

In 2018 Matthias Wittenburg founded Companylinks GmbH in Hamburg, which operates a matching platform for company sales by medium-sized companies with "30 to 300 employees" and a "company value ... in the lower to mid-million range". In 2018, Wittenburg made it clear to the Hamburger Abendblatt that Companylinks was covering a demand in this market segment that has not yet been served by any competitor . "The competitors either lack the required size, independence, personal support or the confidentiality of sales offers," said the Hamburger Abendblatt. Part of the team includes Hans-Jörg Schmidt-Trenz , the former managing director of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce .

According to the Börsen-Zeitung report, Matthias Wittenburg had the idea of founding Companylinks in 2017, "after reading a newspaper article that addressed the problem of succession planning in medium-sized companies". "According to studies, every seventh company cannot find a successor and is going under," the Börsen-Zeitung continues. KfW's economic research department , KfW Research, published a report in February 2019 according to which a total of around 227,000 company handovers can be expected across Germany by the end of 2020.

In February 2019 he was also appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Namibia for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Commitment to business ethics

In particular Matthias Wittenburg's commitment in the field of business ethics , which he says was motivated by a personal, Christian- Protestant background, has repeatedly been the subject of media reports in recent years, also in connection with his position as deputy chairman of the working group of Protestant entrepreneurs from 2011 to 2015 and as spokesman for the regional group Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein since October 2015. He believes that the leadership of banks and business enterprises also considering Christian values such as "foresight, honesty and integrity" is possible and draws parallels to the image of honest businessman , also in the sense of a modern social entrepreneurship . During his time on the board of HSH Nordbank, for example, he initiated cooperation with the Hamburg homeless associations Pik As and Hempels, within which numerous bank employees volunteered.

In retrospect, Wittenburg also assesses his own work as an investment banker, for example for the New York bank Lehman Brothers, which came under fire in the context of the global financial crisis of 2007/2008 and which filed for bankruptcy in 2008: peeled out this framework of values even more clearly. I wonder: is what I am doing right? That's what I measure myself by. To myself and to my creator. ”This is how he stated to Manager Magazin in a short portrait in 2011 - at that time he was employed by Commerzbank AG:“ He claims to turn down honestly questionable chances of winning, he replies to a skeptical question: ' For this reason, for example, I recently decided not to support the financing of a product delivery to a civil war country, as dirty weapons could have been made from this product. '"

Subsequently, Wittenburg also repeatedly spoke out against blanket allegations against bank employees. B. 2015 at the congress of Christian leaders in Leipzig . Although it is obvious that the overheating in the financial markets has led to distortions and major economic damage, at the same time a distinction must be made between the misconduct of individuals and the compliant work of the vast majority of bank employees.

Quote

“It is definitely worthwhile for me to run a bank according to Christian values, but without stepping on the feet of people of other faiths. As a Christian, I try to work honestly. "
