biography

Childhood, Youth and Beginnings

Mattia Maggio's father comes from Salento in Apulia and emigrated to Swabia when he was twelve , his mother was born in Germany as an Italian. Maggio was born in Nürtingen and grew up in Vaihingen an der Enz . As a child, he discovered his passion for football and played with friends on the street, before joining VfB Vaihingen in the E-Jugend . When he was ten years old, he applied to VfB Stuttgart for a trial training session. In a one-month selection process, Maggio prevailed against more than 200 other applicants, and he switched to the youth of the Bundesliga club . He played for Stuttgart up to the U-19 and reached the semi-finals of the B youth championship in 2011 as the champion of the U-17 Bundesliga season south / south-west .

Then he accepted an offer from Novara Calcio from Italy, because he saw opportunities there for further development, especially since he had received little playing time with the Stuttgart team. In Novara, which had previously been promoted to Serie A , he was also in the extended professional squad, but could only be used from January 2012 due to a formal error when changing clubs, which was made in August 2011. On May 13, 2012, Maggio, who is a fan of Arsenal FC and Inter Milan , made his professional debut when he came on for Simone Pesce in the 84th minute of the Serie A defeat by AC Milan . After his first year, the club was relegated back to Serie B , and Maggio initially stayed in the squad for the new season, but without coming back to a professional appearance.

At the end of January 2013, Maggio moved to the second team (U-23) of Hamburger SV after a trial session . At HSV, he was initially used in the A-youth in the U-19 Bundesliga . Maggio scored three goals in four appearances. On May 15, 2013 he played for the U-23 for the first time in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord . In the 3-1 win against SC Victoria Hamburg , he scored the 2-0.

Bundesliga debut at Hamburger SV

At the end of the 2013/14 season , Maggio was added to the first team squad by coach Mirko Slomka because many offensive players in the professional squad were injured and Maggio had performed well in the U-23. Shortly before, he had scored three goals in a 4-2 win against SV Eichede . Maggio made his Bundesliga debut on April 4, 2014 when he came on for Jacques Zoua in the 77th minute of the 2-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . After the season Maggio left the club after the end of the contract and initially remained without a club for a long time.

Engagement at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

Maggio stayed fit in training with the second team of SC Freiburg until January 2015 , before joining the second team of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . There he played in the Regionalliga Südwest from February to June 2015 , but suffered a torn hamstring after two appearances in March, which meant he was out for a month. In the following years he came to eight missions in which he scored a hit.

Back in the amateur area

After he had been without a club from July 2015 because his contract in Hoffenheim was not renewed, he moved to Italy in March 2016 : Maggio was unable to assert himself at Mantova FC after a change of coach, so that he returned to Germany four months later and worked in Joined FC Nöttingen in July 2016 .

In the 2016/17 season he came to a total of 24 appearances in the Regionalliga Südwest for the promoted team . He left the club in the summer of 2017 and was without a club for several months before playing for the Belgian third division club ASV Geel from October 2017 . Due to the bankruptcy of the club, Maggio's contract was terminated in January 2018.

In March 2018 he returned to Hamburg and signed a contract with the upper division TuS Dassendorf until 2021 .

National team

Maggio played three times for the German U-16 national team , for which he made his debut in October 2009 and scored his only goal in that game. Maggio, however, feels like an Italian; it was always his plan to play for Italy. So he changed the association and made his debut on September 15, 2010 for the Italian U-17 national team in a 1: 4 defeat against Israel. Five days later he also played against the German U-17s . On October 27, 2010 he scored his first goal against Cyprus to the 1-0 winner.

Personal

After an accident in early 2010 in which he got a piece of glass in his left eye, Maggio only has 10 percent vision on it.
