Max Pechstein Prize
The Max Pechstein Prize is an international art prize for painting , graphics , sculpture and artistic projects that is awarded every two years by the city of Zwickau .
history
The award was established in 1947 in agreement with the expressionist artist Max Pechstein (1881–1955), who in the same year received honorary citizenship as the son of the city of Zwickau. At Pechstein's initiative, the award was initially purely a sponsorship award for young artists. From 1963 to 1984 the city of Zwickau had to forego the award in favor of the art award of the Karl-Marx-Stadt district . Since 1995, the promotion of young artists has come back to the fore again and the prize is expressly awarded as a sponsorship prize for the first time. This means that (according to self-portrayal) the “focus on young artists and their not yet generally accepted works” can be directed again, in the spirit of co-founder Pechstein. Several of these award winners later took part in the Documenta in Kassel .
Modalities
The award is presented every two years, twice in a row as a sponsorship award for young artists or artist groups (usually up to 30 years, in exceptional cases up to a maximum of 35 years) and once (in the sixth year) as an honorary award for the Complete works of a prominent contemporary artist. There is no restriction to an artistic genre or topic. Artists who live in German-speaking countries can receive the award, nationality is irrelevant. The winner is selected by a jury . The endowment is 5,000 euros as a sponsorship award, 3,000 euros as a scholarship and 10,000 euros as an honorary award. On the occasion of the award ceremony, the award winners will also receive an exhibition in the Zwickau Art Collections .
