Live and act

Maximilian Emmanuel Fremaut came from a French noble family from the Netherlands. After studying hydrotechnology at Leyden University , he initially worked as a hydraulic engineer in Brussels .

After Fremaut had already participated in the restoration of the Slyckenser Seeschleuse, which had sunk in 1752, in the Netherlands , he came to Vienna in 1757 , where he entered the service of the monarchy.

Fremaut was summoned to the Banat by Count Karl Cobenzl in 1758 in order to use the experience he had brought with him from the Netherlands to carry out the project to regulate the Temesch and Bega rivers. This project was started by Fremaut between 1758 and 1761 and was later completed by his students Carl Alexander Steinlein (* 1733, † 1810) and Johann Theodor Kostka (* 1734, † 1807).

The following hydraulic engineering works were part of the project :

This hydrotechnical work was of particular importance and had a positive impact on the socio-economic development of the Banat. The draining of the Banat marshes, some of which formed large, shallow inland lakes, was one of his greatest achievements.

From 1761 to 1768 Fremaut carried out the drainage of the Alibunar swamp area. The project was not finished until 1773 by Kostka. He also worked as a hydraulic engineer in Aquileja , in the Breisgau , Dubowatz , Elbe region , Eschtal , Laibach , Tyrol , Trieste , Slavonia , Rhineland and Mosonmagyaróvár (then Hungarian-Altenburg). From 1763 Fremaut was the chief building director of the Vienna building department and councilor of commerce.

Fremaut died on September 1, 1768 as a result of marsh fever . He was buried in the St. Rochus Church in Villnöß .
