Maximilian Friedrich Freiherr von Nesselrode-Hugenpoet (born February 15, 1773 in Düsseldorf , † August 17, 1851 in Augsburg ) was a Bavarian officer , most recently major general and commander of Nuremberg and Augsburg.

His father, Franz Karl Leopold von Nesselrode-Hugenpoet, was a ducal Jülich secretary, chamberlain and court chamberlain. His mother Maria Theresia was born Freiin von Haxthausen-Liepering . Maximilian Friedrich's brother Carl-Theodor Freiherr von Nesselrode-Hugenpoet served as a major in the 4th Line Infantry Regiment .

Military career

Maximilian Friedrich spent six years in the ducal pfalz-Zweibrücken pagerie and on January 1, 1794, joined the body company of the ducal pfalz-Zweibrücken life guard regiment on foot as a sub-lieutenant . In March 1799 he was transferred to the 1st Chevaulegers Regiment and promoted to first lieutenant on October 23, 1799 . In 1800 he came with two squadrons of his regiment to the combined Chevaulegers regiment, with which he took part in the campaign against France in the same year .

In the Battle of Hohenlinden (December 3, 1800) the Leibeskadron, in which Nesselrode also served, received the order to seize a French battery . The company succeeded, but only two cannons and a howitzer could be captured. During the first attack on the battery, Nesselrode was seriously wounded by a shot in the thigh. He fell from his horse and was taken prisoner by the French, where he was pillaged by the French chasseurs . Comrades from his unit were able to free their first lieutenant after a fierce battle. General Zweibrücken explicitly mentioned Nesselrode in his official report on the Battle of Hohenlinden and praised his brave behavior. Also in the electoral rescript of August 23, 1801, Nesselrode was commended for his courage at Hohenlinden and was awarded the Military Medal of Honor with a cabinet order of November 28, 1802 . On the same day he was given the character of a Rittmeister .

Because of his wounding he was incapacitated until 1804. On April 28, 1804 he came back to the 1st Chevaulegers Regiment and was promoted to the real Rittmeister on December 3, 1804. As such, he took part in the campaign against Austria in 1805 with his regiment, which had been called "Kurprinz" since July 1804 . In the battle near Stecken (December 5, 1805) Nesselrode was wounded again. With the foundation of the Military Max Joseph Order on January 1, 1806 (retroactive to the Army Order of March 1, 1806) by King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria, he was made a Knight of the Order.

During the campaign against Prussia in 1806/07, Nesselrode was at the depot and was only used on the move in July 1807. On January 25, 1808 he was promoted to major in the 4th Chevaulegers Regiment "Bubenhofen" . With this unit he took part in the campaign against Austria in 1809 . His promotion to lieutenant colonel in the 3rd Chevaulegers Regiment "Leiningen" took place on September 4, 1810. During the campaigns of 1812/15 Nesselrode was in the reserve division of his unit.

On August 22, 1814, he and his brother Carl-Theodor were registered in the baron class of nobility in the Kingdom of Bavaria. He was promoted to colonel on February 11, 1824 , and appointed commandant of Nuremberg. On May 22, 1836 he was given the character of major general and on March 30, 1838 was promoted to real major general. A short time later, on April 21, 1838, he became commandant of Augsburg and was awarded the Cross of Honor of the Order of Ludwig on December 4, 1839 .

Maximilian Friedrich Freiherr von Nesselrode-Hugenpoet retired on October 18, 1844 and died on August 17, 1851 at the age of 78 in Augsburg.

Marriage and offspring

Maximilian Friedrich married Sophie von Eisenhofen (1788–1866) in 1810. The couple left behind the two sons and barons Karl Philipp (1816-1894) and Hermann Bertram von Nesselrode-Hugenpoet (1820-1878). Both last served as colonels in the Bavarian Army.

Maximilian Friedrich's natural son Maximilian Freiherr von Nesselrode-Hugenpoet (* 1804), from the connection with Catharina Schlicker, received a Bavarian nobility legitimation on February 6, 1826 with the settlement of his father's name and coat of arms . On April 15, 1879 at Hohenschwangau he was raised to the Bavarian baron class, his enrollment in the baron class in the Kingdom of Bavaria took place on May 9, 1879. Maximilian died on July 12, 1886 in Munich as a Bavarian chamberlain and lieutenant general z. D.
