Life

Ring came from a family of Swedish origin, his father was a colonel in the French army. He grew up in Paris and was taught science there. In 1815 he went to Germany to study history and archeology in southwest Germany and Alsace. Before 1839 he lived in Tübingen and from around 1839 to 1848 in Freiburg im Breisgau . In Germany he married a Baroness von Ulm-Erbach . In 1848 he returned to France. In 1844 he was awarded the title of Correspondant du ministère du recueil des inscriptions latines by the Ministère de l'Instruction publique , and in 1853 that of Correspondant du ministère de l'Instruction publique pour les travaux historiques . He was a member and temporarily secretaire of the Société pour la conservation des monuments historique d'Alsace .

He was active as an ancient scholar with numerous publications on Southwest German and Alsatian archeology, history and architecture.

In his 1829 published in Strasbourg graphic masterpiece "Vues pittoresques of vieux chateaux de l'Allemagne," the archaeologist and draftsman documented in ink drawings not only great castles like Schloss Ortenberg , Rötteln Castle , the stronghold in Emmendingen or Heidelberg Castle , but also remote and in oblivion guessed buildings, about Burg Roggenbach , Gutenberg Castle , Castle New Tannegg and more.

Rings ink drawings, after which lithographs were made, are preserved in the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg. In 1816 they were lithographed in the Paris branch of the Mulhouse- based lithographer, printer and publisher Godefroy Engelmann . As a student of Alois Senefelder , Engelmann introduced this new printing technique in France in 1814 and in Spain in 1820.

In the same year this work was published in Paris with German texts as the Picturesque Views of the Knight Castles of Germany , a reprint was published in 1980.

In his other works, Maximilian von Ring devoted himself exclusively to archaeological and historical studies, the results of which he presented in numerous publications.

His work Mémoire sur les établissements romains du Rhin et du Danube principalement dans le sud-ouest de l'Allemagne , published in two volumes in Paris in 1852 and 1853, was awarded a prize by the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres .

In 1873 he wrote about the siege of Strasbourg during the Franco-Prussian War , which he saw as barbaric . He died on a trip to Bischheim near Strasbourg. One of his sons was a French diplomat at the embassy in Vienna at the time .

Grand Duke Leopold von Baden honored him by awarding him the Order of the Zähringer Lion .

A biography, the processing and appreciation of his historical and archaeological studies, which are reflected in numerous small writings, is still pending. His research is still valuable for archeology today, as he documented the findings of mostly long-destroyed or heavily changed historical sites through his find descriptions and drawings.
