McDull ( Chinese  麥兜  /  麦兜 , Pinyin Mài Dōu , Jyutping Mak 6 Dau 1 ) is an anthropomorphic cartoon pig created by the two Hong Kong comic book authors Alice Mak ( illustrator ) and Brian Tse ( writer ). Although McDull initially only as a minor character in the McMug - Comicsappeared, he developed over time into a character with his own series. McDull appears in several comics, television shows, and films and is now very popular in Hong Kong and East Asia .

character

McDull is a male piglet with a birthmark over his right eye. He has a good heart, but is not particularly clever, but only average in everything; nevertheless he hangs after many dreams. Every time he tries to make something happen he fails; he is then disappointed but tries again or develops new dreams. In this way he creates his own dazzling world. His life is simple and natural. Above all, his trait of never giving up makes him a popular figure.

The name "McDull" has its own history: When the mother, Mrs. Mak, McDull gave birth, she saw a magical plastic basin - in Cantonese as dull pronounced - above her head. She thought this was a sign of the gods and named her son "Dull". In Kung Fu Ding ding dong explains why McDull is not very smart: As McDull still a toddler, was it sent Ms. Mak to a test on the Mozart effect . Unfortunately he was assigned to the control group and instead of Mozart's music he was exposed to 'nonsense songs'.

family

McDull's mother is called Mrs. Mak Tam Yuk Lin ( 麥 譚玉蓮 ), his father Mak Bing ( 麥炳 ), who, however, disappeared before McDull was born. Despite their mutual affection, mother and son often have conflicts. Mrs. Mak is a typical Hong Kong mother who expects her son to get good grades, go to Hong Kong University , and become a respected employee. McDull tries hard to grant these wishes, but never succeeds.

In the early stories it is implied that McMug is a distant cousin of McDull.

McDull and Excreman

One Christmas day, McDull poops an anthropomorphic dung heap: Excreman ( 屎 撈 人 , Jyutping si 2 lou 1 jan 4 ). After providing Excreman with a scarf (made of toilet paper ) and a hat ( spittoon ), Excreman takes him to a dung world. There Excreman reveals his greatest wish: He wants to be fertilizer for flowers.

The next morning, Excreman brings McDull back to his room and disappears to reach his destination. Before he disappears, he leaves McDull a message: "Think of us whenever you see the most humble, the abandoned and the despised." (Remember us whenever you see the humblest, the deserted and the despised).

(This story is loosely based on the original The Snowman by Raymond Briggs . ExcreMaN also has similarities with Mr. Hankey from South Park on.)

He spends his time with classmates who are geese , turtles and other pigs. McDull tries everything to make his mother proud and she tries hard to make his childhood happy. McDull wants to travel to the Maldives . Since his mother cannot afford the trip, she takes him on a ride on the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak . There is a sign "Go to the Maldives". Film music

In 2002 the score for My Life as McDull was released. It was developed by Steve Ho ( 何崇志 added), a Hong Kong musician who at the 21st Hong Kong Film Award the Best Original Film Score had won. Its mixture of classical European music and "modern" sounds increased the interest in classical music in Hong Kong.

The title track is a piece from Six Moments Musicaux No. 3 in F minor by Franz Schubert with Cantonese text.

The narrator tells stories from the life of McDull's ancestors Mc Zi - 麥子 , "wheat", which alludes to Mozi - 墨子 , the founder of Mohism. Then McDull's teacher tells Miss Chan about a Chinese annual festival. At the end the development of a character is explained.
