action

After the events in The Mechanic, Arthur Bishop fakes his death so that he can retire in Rio de Janeiro . But a young woman, Renee Tran, see him together with her bodyguards in order to get him to kill three people and make it appear to be an accident. Bishop takes a picture of the woman and escapes after a fight with the henchmen. He goes to Thailand , where he finds shelter in a beach hut belonging to his friend Mei. Researching the Internet, he finds out that the young woman who visited him in Rio de Janeiro has an employer named Riah Crain.

A young woman, Gina Thornton, appears on the beach and asks Mei to complete her first aid kit. Mei notices that she has a broken lip and bruises and must have been mistreated. On the same evening, Mei observes from the beach that the young woman on her boat is being attacked and asks Bishop for help. He boarded the boat, but his attempts to immobilize the tormentor failed. In the ensuing confrontation, the man falls unhappy, hits a hard boat with his head and is dead. Mei reaches the boat and takes Gina with her to the beach. Bishop quickly examines the boat before setting it on fire to clear up any traces.

Bishop finds out that Gina works for Crain. He confronts her and learns that she had worked in a child protection center in Cambodia and that Crain blackmailed her with the threat of killing these children if she did not go to Bishop's house. Bishop concludes that Crain's plan was to make him fall in love with Gina, who would then be kidnapped and Bishop would be forced to accept the assignment. He later notices that Crain's agents are watching him and actually gets closer to Gina. He confides in her that he and Crain were orphans who were sold together to a gangster. There they were trained to be child soldiers until Bishop escaped and Crain stayed behind. Crain wanted to take revenge on Bishop for it. Bishop and Gina spend a night of love before they are kidnapped by Crain's henchmen the next morning. Bishop is brought to Bangkok to see Crain, who explains to him that he is supposed to kill three people one after the other, making it look like an accident.

The first target is an African warlord named Krill who is detained on Penang Island in Malaysia for his own safety . Bishop travels to Malaysia and is arrested on an excuse. In prison, he wins Krill's trust by preventing a planned murder of him. Soon after, he kills Krill, makes the murder look like an accident, and escapes from prison with the help of Crain's agents.

Bishop learns he only has 36 hours to eliminate the next target, Adrian Cook, who runs a trafficking ring in Sydney . Cook owns a penthouse apartment there in a 76-story skyscraper, in which a glass swimming pool is located in a bulge. When Cook swims in the pool, Bishop breaks the glass and Cook is washed out in the suction and hits the floor. Bishop manages to escape easily.

Bishop manages to find the yacht in which Gina is being held, but an attempt at rescue fails. He is told that he has 24 hours to kill his next target, Max Adams, an arms dealer in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Varna . To do this, he penetrates its headquarters, an old memorial for communism , under which there is a submarine bunker. But he does not kill Adams, instead he allies with him to kill Crain together with him. Bishop pretends to have killed Adams and wants to meet with Crain. This agrees, but in turn has decided to kill Bishop.

Before Bishop can get to Crain's yacht and on the boat itself, he has to clear countless mercenaries out of the way. Eventually he finds Gina, but the two of them discover that there are explosives on the boat and that Crain has started the explosion. Bishop brings Gina into an underwater chamber, from where she escapes in a diving bell. He himself sets out to find Crain, with whom he first has an exchange of fire and then fights a fight in which Bishop remains the winner. He chains Crain to the yacht with the anchor chains and can get to safety a few moments before the boat explodes. Gina learns that there are no survivors.

Gina returns to Cambodia to resume work. Surprisingly, Bishop turns up at her place. In the final sequence, Adams is shown watching a video from a surveillance camera showing Bishop's escape using an air-filled anchor steel chamber. Adams deletes this video to be used as evidence of Bishop's survival.

Reviews

“Dennis Gansel's Hollywood debut (“ The Fourth Power ”) not only offers furiously choreographed action scenes, but also impressive show values. The opening sequence, which ends on the cable car to Sugar Loaf, could hardly have looked better in a Bond film. Jason Statham shines again as a tough lone fighter, who embodies his role with a dash of self-irony: In order to escape from a prison island with intact skin, Bishop smears himself with an anti-shark cream before jumping into the sea. Dennis Gansel made his debut in Hollywood with flying colors: The "Mechanic" now plays in the same league as "Mission: Impossible". "

“Unattractive sequel to the violent action film 'The Mechanic' (2013) by Simon West. The thriller, which is only solid in a few moments, but otherwise without any interest in the figure psychological subtleties and traditions of the subgenre, celebrates landscapes and pompous architecture with powerful images, without telling a stringent and comprehensive story.
