The Meerhofsee is a lake in the town of Alzenau in the Lower Franconian district of Aschaffenburg .

location

The lake is located in the lower Kahlgrund in the urban area of Alzenau between the river Kahl and the district road AB 25. The eponymous Meerhof is located on a peninsula . The A 45 runs to the west .

description

The lake has a length of approx. 685 meters and a width of approx. 275 meters. Less the islands, peninsulas and indentations, this corresponds to a water surface of approx. 12 ha. The average depth of the water is approx. 5 - 8 meters depending on the nature of the water bed. Occasionally shallows have also been detected, one of them in the western sea area. The depth sounding there allegedly resulted in 19 meters. A source is also suspected at this point .

The Meerhofsee is divided into two halves, which are connected by a 30 meter wide but very shallow flow. In the eastern part there is the Meerhofsee lido with a water playground and a skater facility .

The wooded island in this area becomes a peninsula in summer when the water level is low and thus hangs on the headland that divides the lake. Both areas are also connected by a pipe in the north-eastern part of the bathing lake. A dam separates the Meerhofsee from the Kahl.

history

In 1959 a company from Goldbach started to mine gravel at the Meerhof in Alzenau. Already in 1968 the dismantling was stopped and the area became the property of the city of Alzenau. The Wilmundsheim mine soon filled with groundwater and rainwater, and natural conditions quickly developed, with a considerable flora and fauna . In 1972 the name of the quarry pond was given by the Meerhof on the shore . At that time the lake was 18 hectares in size. The lake was designed as a swimming lake in 1974.

On August 11, 1981, the dam separating the Kahl from the Meerhofsee broke due to a severe flood and the water of the river flowed into the deeper lake. As a result, its water level rose by around 6 meters. The lake level has fallen by almost 3 meters since the 1960s.

fauna

The most common fish species found in the Meerhofsee are the eel , perch , bream , gudgeon , pike , carp , crucian carp , roach , rudd , tench and pikeperch . Due to the particularly good water quality of the Meerhofsee, brown trout and rainbow trout could also be stocked.
